Terms sometimes used to refer to features of CLT include process oriented, task-based, and inductive, or discovery oriented. Inasmuch as strict adherence to a given text is not likely to be true to its processes and goals, CLT cannot be found in any one textbook or set of curricular materials. In keeping with the notion of context of situation, CLT is properly seen as an approach or theory of intercultural communicative competence to be used in developing materials and methods appropriate to a given context of learning. And contexts change.

India's luxury airline Vistara flies into the sunset



Indian full-service carrier Vistara will operate its last flight on Monday, after nine years in existence.


A joint venture between Singapore Airlines and the Tata Sons, Vistara will merge with Tata-owned Air India to form a single entity with an expanded network and broader fleet.


This means that all Vistara operations will be transferred to and managed by Air India, including helpdesk kiosks and ticketing offices. The process of migrating passengers with existing Vistara bookings and loyalty programmes to Air India has been under way over the past few months.


"As part of the merger process, meals, service ware and other soft elements have been upgraded and incorporates aspects of both Vistara and Air India," an Air India spokesperson said in an email response.


Amid concerns that the merger could impact service standards, the Tatas have assured that Vistara's in-flight experience will remain unchanged.


Known for its high ratings in food, service, and cabin quality, Vistara has built a loyal customer base and the decision to retire the Vistara brand has been criticised by fans, branding experts, and aviation analysts.


The consolidation was effectively done to clean up Vistara's books and wipe out its losses, said Mark Martin, an aviation analyst.


Air India has essentially been "suckered into taking a loss-making airline" in a desperate move, he added.


"Mergers are meant to make airlines powerful. Never to wipe out losses or cover them."


To be sure, both Air India and Vistara's annual losses have reduced by more than half over the past year, and other operating metrics have improved too. But the merger process so far has been turbulent.


The exercise has been riddled with problems − from pilot shortages that have led to massive flight cancellations, to Vistara crew going on mass sick leave over plans to align their salary structures with Air India.


There have also been repeated complaints about poor service standards on Air India, including viral videos of broken seats and non-functioning inflight entertainment systems.


The Tatas have announced a $400m (£308m) programme to upgrade and retrofit the interiors of its older aircraft and also a brand-new livery. They've also placed orders for hundreds of new Airbus and Boeing planes worth billions of dollars to augment their offering.


But this "turnaround" is still incomplete and riddled with problems, according to Mr Martin. A merger only complicates matters.


Experts say that the merger strikes a dissonant chord from a branding perspective too.


Harish Bijoor, a brand strategy specialist, told the BBC he was feeling "emotional" that a superior product offering like Vistara which had developed a "gold standard for Indian aviation" was ceasing operations.


"It is a big loss for the industry," said Mr Bijoor, adding it will be a monumental task for the mother brand Air India to simply "copy, paste and exceed" the high standards set by Vistara, given that it's a much smaller airline that's being gobbled up by a much larger one.


Mr Bijoor suggests a better strategy would have been to operate Air India separately for five years, focusing on improving service standards, while maintaining Vistara as a distinct brand with Air India prefixed to it.


"This would have given Air India the time and chance to rectify the mother brand and bring it up to the Vistara level, while maintaining its uniqueness," he adds.


Beyond branding, the merged entity will face a slew of operational challenges.


"Communication will be a major challenge in the early days, with customers arriving at the airport expecting Vistara flights, only to find Air India branding," says Ajay Awtaney, editor of Live From A Lounge, an aviation portal. "Air India will need to maintain clear communication for weeks."


Another key challenge, he notes, is cultural: Vistara's agile employees may struggle to adjust to Air India's complex bureaucracy and systems.


But the biggest task for the merged carrier would be offering customers a uniform flying experience.


These are "two airlines with very different service formats are being integrated into one airline. It is going to be a hotchpotch of service formats, cabin formats, branding, and customer experience. It will involve learning and unlearning, and such a process has rarely worked with airlines and is seldom effective," said Mr Martin.


Still, many believe Vistara had to go − now or some years later.


A legacy brand like Air India, with strong global recognition and 'India' imprinted in its identity, wouldn't have allowed a smaller, more premium subsidiary to overshadow its revival process.


Financially too, it makes little sense for the Tatas to have two loss-making entities compete with one another.


The combined strength of Vistara and Air India could also place the Tatas in a much better position to compete with market leader Indigo.


The unified Air India group (including Air India Express, which completed its merger with the former Air Asia India in October) "will be bigger and better with a fleet size of nearly 300 aircraft, an expanded network and a stronger workforce", an Air India spokesperson said. 


"Getting done with the merger means that Air India grows overnight, and the two teams start cooperating instead of competing. There will never be one right day to merge. Somewhere, a line had to be drawn," said Mr Awtaney.


But for many Vistara loyalists, its demise leaves a void in India's skies for a premium, full-service carrier - marking the third such gap after the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways.


It's still too early to say if Air India, which often ranks at the bottom of airline surveys, can successfully fill that void.

Eighty million people around the world have a natural stammer. Krupa Padhy speaks to those who've decided to embrace it – and discovers surprising benefits.

It was the summer of 2011 and Joshua St Pierre was working in Edmonton, Canada. He was mid-conversation when he realised the other person wasn't listening. It was a moment that changed his life.

St Pierre has a stammer, and until then, had always focused on trying to speak as fluently as he could, to make it more comfortable for others to listen to him. But now, he began to wonder if it was fair for him to be the one doing all the work – and what a more balanced effort might feel like.

"I I I, like most people, spent most of my l lifetime desperately trying to come up to a standard of nooormalcy," says St Pierre, who has asked that his quotes in this article include the words he stammers on. "I was doing a whole lot to try and make other people feel comfortable when it really actually wasn't much about communication itself."

An estimated 80 million people around the world speak with a stammer (also known as a stutter in many countries), meaning, they know what they wish to say, but have difficulty saying the words. Their speech is disrupted by repetitions, pauses or stops. There is still no clear explanation of what exactly causes stammering, but research suggests that the region of the brain responsible for planning and executing our speech functions differently in those with a stammer.

Many children – between 60-80% – who have a stutter will recover spontaneously. But contrary to popular belief, there isn't a permanent fix to overcoming a stammer. Whilst treatment and support are available (such as speech language therapy), a high number of people with  stammers may relapse after completing therapy. It can be a life-long effort to suppress a stammer, something US President Joe Biden has spoken about openly.


As St Pierre notes, however, the physical impact is only one aspect of the condition. Another is social and may be more about how stammering is perceived in the mind of the listener. Studies suggest, for example, that people who stammer openly may be considered anxious, nervous or embarrassing, purely because of that speech pattern. In a paper inspired by his conversation in Edmonton, St Pierre, who is now a researcher in critical disability studies at the University of Alberta, Canada, argues that this social perception of stammering as "broken speech" is not really about the stammer itself. It's about the listener's "cultural norms of efficiency, pace, and self-mastery", and their expectations of what successful communication should be like: succinct and fluent.


"It's not the fact that having d d d dysfluent speech that causes the breakdown,” argues St Pierre. "It's the way in which these forms of speech aren't able to be taken up within the world and heard urm as speech. That's a really cruel thing, and that's a political thing."


St Pierre and others, including some speech therapists, are suggesting an alternative view of stammering: not as a deficiency, but as a way of speaking that is no better or worse than any others.


In fact, stammering openly can have many benefits, says Courtney Byrd, a professor of speech, language and hearing sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, US. She and her team have been working on a model of treatment that encourages people to stammer with confidence, even if others around them see it as a deficiency.


"We encourage stuttering openly for effective communication, because when you are avoiding it, you are essentially stifling your own intellect," says Byrd. "I'm going to say [to people who stutter]: you can be the most effective communicator and still openly stutter. And I'm going to show you the path to that. And I also want you to know that no matter where you live, you are going to encounter highly educated people who are completely ignorant about stuttering, and because they are ignorant they are going to treat you ignorantly. They are going to say things that will hurt, and they'll say things to you out of trying to help you."


Speaking to people with a stammer from different countries and cultures, it is striking how similar some of their experiences are – both in terms of the pain they suffered through due to the prejudices of those around them, but also, the relief of no longer hiding it.


Jia Bin was born in a small village in Sichuan province in southwest China. Her parents were poor, and she felt she was adding to their burden when she began to stammer as a child.


"It came to a point where I hated myself," she says. "There were two forces in me – one was to communicate, the other was not to speak. I feel like I compromised a lot of my authenticity."


Bin chose to leave China, and move to the US, partly because she feared her stutter would never be fully accepted at home. "I was holding down a job, I was married, I gave birth to my daughter before coming to America at 32. I completed what society wants a normal Chinese girl to do, but I was so miserable. There was a part of me crying for freedom. I'd never seen a successful person who stutters in China."


Bin now runs a stammer support group on the Chinese social media platform WeChat, and is studying for a PhD in communicative sciences and disorders at Michigan State University. She no longer hides her stutter, and finds this freeing, but her family still struggles to accept it. Upon a recent trip to China, she decided to stammer openly for the first time at a family gathering. Older relatives gossiped and the children laughed at her. "If you were able to hide it for 30 years, why don't you continue to hide it for another 30 years?" asked her mother.


Classifying stammering as a disability is a divisive subject, because as St Pierre puts it, "the power of ableism is so strong" – meaning, some people with a stammer may not wish to identify as disabled.


 Former Ernst and Young partner Iain Wilkie spent 40 years of his life feeling ashamed of his stammer. He first started stammering at the age of seven and was bullied for it by other children. But in 2022, he gave a TED talk in London in which he described stuttering as a gift: "I'd like to start by telling you that I stutter and I'm ok with that," he began. "It took me 35 years to be ok with that. And I hope it's ok with you."


Wilkie, who heads the charity 50 Million Voices, which offers support to people with a stammer in the workplace, believes those who stammer are a huge pool of under-used talent.


"It's rubbish to think people who stutter can't communicate well," he says. On the contrary, he is convinced that people who stammer are very good with words. "There's great presence, we give each other time, it's like a slow down and we just wait for those words to arrive," says  Wilkie, referring to meetings with colleagues who stammer. "This is the team that listens best. When the stuttered word arrives, it comes with a power and weight."


Ronan Miller has studied the relationship between stammering and language-learning for his PhD at the University of Valencia, in Spain. It's something he has firsthand experience of. As a young adult, he moved from Britain to Spain, to leave behind the stress he had experienced when stammering in English. Now, even though he stammers more in Spanish than in English, he finds freedom in speaking another language.


Miller also finds that people who stammer have a different relationship with language than fluent speakers. "Many of us are used to being quite nimble linguistically as a way of navigating a fluency-centric world, for example by varying syntax or using synonyms to reduce the impact of stammering," he says. "However, I think that for this to happen the needs of students who stammer need to be understood and recognised in the classroom."


As one research paper notes, people with a stammer still face social rejection from childhood through adulthood, with studies documenting wide-ranging discrimination including worse job prospects and lower earnings. As St Pierre points out in his paper on how cultural norms shape ideas of "broken speech", we as a society also have an important part to play in normalising voices that don't sound like our own, for example, by focusing on the speaker's message and intention, not how fluent they are. There is much more to language than just words.


St Pierre has found his own liberation in not just accepting but enjoying his way of communicating. "I now speak thinking about my own pleasure that I find in speaking as opposed to the the displeasure that my l l listeners are going to receive," he says. "So so that's way more important."

English Language Teaching in Brazil:

A Gap in Policy, Problems in Practice


    Only three percent of Brazilians are estimated to speak English despite the status of this language as a mandatory subject in grades 10 to 12 of basic education and preferred foreign language in grades 5 to 9. The widespread concept in the Brazilian society that speaking English is beneficial to individuals because it provides access to the globalised world does not seem to be enough to promote the actual learning of the language by the majority of the population, and it is argued here that this fact has to do with a gap in the foreign language teaching policy documents: the 2015 National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB 2015), the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters for Primary Education (PCN-EF), and the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters for Secondary Education (PCN-EM). These documents do not prescribe the necessary conditions for English Language Teaching (ELT) to take place effectively, but, instead, provide suggestions for teachers on how to adapt to the status quo, which means focusing on reading to the detriment of the other aspects of the English language due to a number of factors ranging from a lack of resources to a large number of students per class.


    Both PCN-EF (Brazil, 1998) and PCN-EM (Brazil, 2000) present progressive ideas about how a foreign language should be taught in the basic education classroom. Such ideas include a social interactionist view of language, which aligns with contemporary research in second language teaching and means a shift from the traditional grammar-translation method largely employed in Brazilian schools in previous decades. The Parameters also recommend interdisciplinary work, the implementation of cross-curricular themes, formative assessment in addition to summative, a value of students’ prior knowledge and position as critical subjects, and, thus, an approach to teaching as negotiation that aims to educate students for the full exercise of citizenship, which includes the notions of respect for difference and diversity  that can be promoted by the teaching and learning of foreign languages.


    However, the Parameters fail in pointing out the necessary conditions for this teaching and learning process to occur. For example, they acknowledge that reading and writing should be focused on to the detriment of listening and speaking due to the difficulties faced by the teacher in basic education (Brazil, 1998): large classrooms, lack of appropriate resources including class and preparation time for the teacher and opportunities for the students to be exposed to the language outside the classroom, and, in many situations, teachers’ lack of knowledge of the subject matter. Instead, what they should do is to actively propose that a smaller number of students sit in English classes – as it was allowed by LDB 1996 and continues to be so by LDB 2015, that more class and preparation time be granted the teacher, that schools have English resources that students can access to familiarise themselves with the language, and that better teacher education be implemented.

Anxiety has kept 28% of UK children away from school

Many children in the UK are missing school because they feel too anxious, according to a new survey. Research by stem4, a mental health charity for young people, found that 28% of children aged between 12 and 18 had missed school in the last year because of anxiety. The charity is asking the government, the health service and schools to do more to help pupils with their mental health.

More than 1,000 young people were surveyed, and almost half said that they were suffering from a mental health difficulty. Experts say that the problems have gotten worse since the coronavirus pandemic. At the moment, 38% of schools in England have a mental health support team. But the government has said that it wants to increase that to at least 50% by the end of March 2025, as well as training teachers and giving more money to the health service.

However, the survey also found that it is not only mental health that is keeping children away from school. Almost a quarter of children aged between 12 and 18 have missed school because of family problems, while 18% have stayed away because of problems with friends or other pupils. The stress of exams was also given as a reason for missing school.

Nihara Krause, the founder of stem4, said that spending a lot of time away from school can have long-lasting negative effects on children.
