“Tom Cruise has paid tribute to his Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer, who died earlier this week aged 65. Appearing at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Cruise led a crowd in The Colosseum theatre in a moment of silence to ‘honour a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer.’ ‘I can’t tell you how much I admired his work, how much I thought of him as a human being and how grateful and honoured I was when he joined Top Gun,’ Cruise said of Kilmer, who played his rival Ice Man in Top Gun in 1986.The 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick marked Kilmer’s last movie role. Kilmer, also known for his roles playing Batman and Jim Morrison in The Doors, died Tuesday night in Los Angeles.”

Postclassic Period

The end of the Terminal Classic Period has been viewed as the death knell for the Maya civilization, and the Postclassic Period has traditionally been described as a militaristic, decadent, and degenerate phase in Maya history. But more enlightened views would see that the militarism was part and parcel with other features that suggest a tendency towards secularism and the resultant downplaying of the ceremonial rituals that dominated the Classic Period. Moreover, much of our interpretations of the Postclassic were projected from ethnohistoric accounts of the Spanish intrusions in the region. Very little attention has been directed towards understanding the Postclassic through archaeology, although recent research on the period, particularly at Santa Rita in northern Belize, suggests continuity from the Classic Period. The focus of cultural developments moved from the Central Maya Lowlands north, to the Yucatan, where the Spanish first contacted the Maya culture.

Once the Spanish established their base in northern Yucatan by 1546, they began to impose their views and customs upon the Maya. This was a time of great disruption. The Maya people suffered from introduction of European diseases suppression of native traditions conscription of labor.

Tragically, the vast majority of Maya documents were destroyed by Spanish religious zealots. The Auto de Fe of Fray DeLanda is among the most famed. Credited with providing scraps of information on the Mayan language, in truth he is responsible for burning the majority of the known text at the time. The created a huge void of information about the language and practices of this advanced civilization. The Maya of the Yucatan struggled to maintain their life ways under Spanish rule. The Maya forest garden and milpa strategy, unfamiliar to and unappreciated by the Spanish, was not accepted.

After the conquest of the northern Yucatan, the southern Maya Itza kingdom still dominated the southern lowlands, where Tikal once ruled. Hostile to their neighbors and ensconced in the Maya forest, they were able to maintain their independence for nearly two centuries after the Spanish arrived.

Postclassic Mural

It was not until 1696 that the Spanish conquered the last of the independent Maya city-states, the Itza of Tayasal, the descendants of the ancient Maya realm. The Central Maya Lowlands, which today include most of Belize and the Peten of Guatemala, are still home to Maya who can trace their ancestry back into prehistory as attested by the patronyms of local villagers: Teck, Bacab, Mai, Cocom, and Panti to name a few.

In relation to the elements from the comic strip, Text VI, consider the following statements.

I. In the utterance “I don’t understand women”, the word “women” is the plural form of woman, and is classified as an irregular noun whose plural is formed by mutation, in other words, a change in the vowel of the singular form. Other examples of plural nouns formed by mutation include “man/men”, “tooth/teeth”, and “mouse/mice”.

II. In the clause “that’s always worked”, replacing the verb “worked” with the phrasal verb “given up” would preserve the original meaning of the sentence, as both expressions convey the idea of successful effort or effectiveness over time.

III. The term "yeah" is a conjunction that expresses surprise or disbelief, commonly used in formal written English to indicate hesitation or irony.

IV. In “I’ll pretend I do”, the term “do” refers to “understand women” and is used to avoid unnecessary repetition.

V. In the clause “Yeah, that’s always worked”, the apostrophe+s (´s) is a contraction of the verb “to be” in the present tense (that is), forming a structure that indicates an action that began in the past and continues into the present.

Mark the alternative in which the statements are correct.

What's the Difference Between a Solstice and an Equinox?

You may know that the solstices and equinoxes signal the changing of the seasons on Earth, but do you remember which is which? Are they just different names for the same thing? Actually, a solstice and an equinox are sort of opposites.

The seasons on Earth change because the planet is slightly tilted on its axis as it travels around the Sun. This means different points on Earth receive more or less sunlight at different times of year. If Earth were not tilted, the Sun would always appear to be directly above the Equator, the amount of light a given location receives would be fixed, and there would be no seasons. There also would be no need to mark equinoxes or solstices.

The two solstices happen in June (20 or 21) and December (21 or 22). These are the days when the Sun’s path in the sky is the farthest north or south from the Equator. A hemisphere’s winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and its summer solstice the year’s longest. In the Northern Hemisphere the June solstice marks the start of summer: this is when the North Pole is tilted closest to the Sun, and the Sun’s rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. The December solstice marks the start of winter: at this point the South Pole is tilted closest to the Sun, and the Sun’s rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn. (In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are reversed.)

The equinoxes happen in March (about March 21) and September (about September 23). These are the days when the Sun is exactly above the Equator, which makes day and night of equal length.

Read the text by Brown to answer question.

The question of whether or not to distinguish between native and nonnative speakers in the teaching profession has grown into a common and productive topic of research in the last decade. For many decades the English language teaching profession assumed that native English-speaking teachers, by virtue of their superior model of oral production, comprised the ideal English language teacher. Then, Medgyes (1994), among others, showed in his research that nonnative English speaking teachers offered as many if not more inherent advantages. Other authors concur by noting not only that multiple varieties of English are now considered legitimate and acceptable, but also that teachers who have actually gone through the process of learning English possess distinct advantages over native speakers.

As we move into a new paradigm in which the concepts of native and nonnative “speaker” become less relevant, it is perhaps more appropriate to think in terms of the proficiency level of a user of a language. Speaking is one of four skills and may not deserve in all contexts to be elevated to the sole criterion for proficiency. So, the profession is better served by considering a person’s communicative proficiency across the four skills. Teachers of any language, regardless of their own variety of English, can then be judged accordingly, and in turn, their pedagogical training and experience can occupy focal attention.

Jammie Dodgers unveils new flavour with an 'exotic twist'... and fans are divided

Biscuit lovers had mixed reactions upon learning there was a new Mango and Passionfruit flavour available to buy at supermarkets.

The 140g packet of biccies is 90p at Sainsbury's and just one of a range of new flavours of the iconic brand.

The flavour is mango and passionfruit. Credit: Facebook

A photo of the mango and passionfruit Jammie Dodgers was shared to the Newfoods UK social media pages where reactions where mixed.

"Wish they would just stick to original!!!! More jam!!!!!!!!" wrote one person.

Another added: "Oh yum."

A third commented: "Tasteless."

And a fourth reacted: "We need to get these."

A spokesperson for Fox Burton's which makes Jammie Dodgers said they expect the new flavours to fly off the shelf.

"We are very excited about these new flavours and expect them to do well in market," the spokesperson told The Sun.

Another of the unique flavours available at supermarkets is cherry, apple and blackcurrant, and strawberry Jammie Dodgers.

Last year, the brand raised eyebrows when shoppers found a re-released banana version of Jammie Dodgers.

The banana flavouring replaces the classic jam filling that Brits have grown to love over the years.

The yellow-flavoured biscuits were first launched in the UK in July 2022 inspired by the Minions film, The Rise of Gru.

It was not the first new flavour the biscuit company has tried - other tempting flavours have been launched such as cherry and apple.

One of the major foci of applied linguistics scholarship has been the foreign or second language classroom. A glance through the past century or so of language teaching gives us an interesting picture of varied interpretations of the best way to teach a foreign language. As schools of thought have come and gone, so have language teaching trends waxed and waned in popularity.

Albert Marckwardt (1972) saw these “changing winds and shifting sands” as a cyclical pattern where a new paradigm of teaching methodology emerged about every quarter of a century, with each new method breaking from the old but at the same time taking with it some of the positive aspects of the previous paradigm. One of the best examples of the cyclical nature of methods is seen in the revolutionary Audiolingual Method (ALM) of the late 1940s and 1950s. The ALM borrowed principles and beliefs from its predecessor by almost half a century, the Direct Method, while breaking away entirely from the Grammar-Translation paradigm. Within a short time, however, ALM critics were advocating more attention to rules of language which, to some, smacked a return to Grammar Translation.

Let’s start by discussing smoking. It continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death in many countries. The highest percent of smoking tends to be seen among people with a high school diploma (or not even that!), and the lowest is among those with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Trends in efforts to quit smoking habits also vary by educational level. Adults with only a high school diploma historically have had the lowest rates of quitting smoking compared to adults overall. But these data document the relationship when it is too late: Adults don’t drop out of school, children do.

The field of public health recognizes education is a social determinant of health and an indicator of well-being. National efforts in North America are currently focused on promoting literacy, and increasing high school completion and college enrollment. It is critical to ensure that children have positive learning experiences while they are still young so that they can achieve educational success. This is one of the best ways to ensure that they can live healthier lives as adults.

A human baby’s brain is not fully developed at birth. Rapid brain developments and the acquisition of foundation skills occur in the first few years of life and then steady into childhood and adolescence. Abuse, neglect, poverty and related stressful exposures can put children at risk for problems with healthy cognitive, social and emotional development, which can interfere with learning.

To effectively address the problem, learning environments must include staff who have knowledge about trauma and symptoms of trauma. Most importantly, the school ecosystems, which include the schools’ staff, must be prepared and able to provide children, and each other, safe, supportive and trusting environments. Thus, creating effective solutions will require a multigenerational approach – that is, one that focuses on the children affected as well as on the adults dealing with them. In order to promote well-being across the lifespan, we must collectively invest in meeting the needs of future generations.

But the large language models that power popular tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude were not designed to be accurate or factual. Text 1 – How children learn languages

Questions 31 to 39

How long does it take to learn a language?

Many different factors affect the time it takes. These include your child’s age, first language, their reason for BLANK I English and their teachers. You can help your child learn quickly by BLANK II them lots of opportunities to use English. It helps to have real reasons for BLANK III a language, rather than just BLANK IV grammar.

Is it true that boys and girls learn languages differently?

Yes. At early ages, girls tend to develop language more quickly. Remember that it’s OK for children to develop at different speeds. It will be more similar by secondary school age. However, by this stage children might think that languages are ‘more of a girl thing’. Attitudes to learning can have a big impact on educational success so it’s important to find ways to encourage your child and help them enjoy their learning.

Do primary and secondary children learn languages differently?

Yes, there are differences.

Primary school children are learning their first and second languages at the same time. It’s really important to support both languages. Children with a strong foundation in their first language will find it easier to learn a second language. Encourage your child to play, sing and read in both their first and second languages. Remember to plan separate times to focus on each language. If you say something in English and then in another language, your child will automatically listen for their stronger language and ‘tune out’ the other language.

Teenagers are interested in exploring their personalities and identities. This creates lots of opportunities to use popular culture, films, TV, music and video games. Teenagers also enjoy challenging authority, which provides opportunities for debates and discussion.

Will learning another language affect how well my child does at school?

Multilingual children learn at a young age that they can express their ideas in more than one way. This helps their thought process and makes them better, more flexible, learners. Research has found that children who speak more than one language do better in school, and have better memories and problem-solving skills.

What kind of learner is my child?

Watch your child playing. What do they enjoy doing? Puzzles and problem-solving? Physical play and sports? Word games? Writing stories? Creative play? Try doing these types of activities in English and make a note of what your child responds to best. Alternatively, ask your child to create in English their own one-week ‘dream timetable of activities’. Let them choose how to present it. For example, they could act it out, prepare a written fact file, make a video, draw pictures, go on a treasure hunt or make a scrap book.

Has technology facilitated teachers’ work?
Or reduced teacher burnout?

When we set out to study pandemic-related changes in schools, we thought we’d find that learning management systems that rely on technology to improve teaching would make educators’ jobs easier. We believed technology would mean positive stimulus to teachers. Instead, our data and analyses showed that teachers whose schools were using learning management systems had higher rates of burnout.

During the phenomenon of the covid-19 pandemic, when schools across the country were under lockdown orders, schools adopted new technologies to facilitate remote learning during the crisis. These technologies included learning management systems, which are online platforms that help educators organize and keep track of their coursework.

We were puzzled to find that teachers who used a learning management system such as Canvas or Schoology reported higher levels of burnout. Ideally, these tools should have simplified their jobs. We also thought these systems would improve teachers’ ability to organize documents and assignments, mainly because they would house everything digitally, and thus, reduce the need to print documents or bring piles of student work home to grade.

However, the data told a different story. Instead of being used to replace old ways of completing tasks, the learning management systems were simply another thing on teachers’ plates.
