In India, people have caught monkeys by setting out a small box with a tasty nut in it. There is an opening in the box large enough for the monkey to thrust in his hand, but too small for him to withdraw it once his clutched the nut. When the monkey has grabbed the prize, he must either let go and regain his freedom or keep hold and stay trapped. Most monkeys hold onto the nut, making it easy for hunters to pick them up. People have been known to get caught in the same kind of trap. The person who puts the goodie in the box controls the person who grabs it, but if we are willing to let go of the goodies, we are free of control.

Come to Center Parcs

Center Parcs is the perfect family holiday. There are four of them in England and you can do almost anything you want there.

If it’s exercise you want, you can go walking or cycling through the forest. There are also adventure sports like windsurfing. If you are a team player, you can play basketball, tennis, or football. But if you prefer a quieter life, you can do Tai Chi or yoga in the gym, or go swimming in the numerous swimming pools. And if you do not like doing exercise at all, you can learn to paint in the art class or just sit in the coffee shop and relax.

Centers Parcs is not only for adults; children enjoy it as much as their parents. Mothers and fathers can relax in the sauna or play golf, while babies and small children play with their friends in the Time Out clubs. There is something for everyone at Center Parcs.

The Babylonians were the first people to systematically apply myths to constellations and astrology and describe the twelve signs of the zodiac. The Egyptians followed shortly after by refining the Babylonian system of astrology, but it was the Greeks who shaped it into its modern form. The Greeks borrowed some of their myths from the Babylonians and came up with their own. For that matter, even the word astrology — as well as the science of astronomy — is derived from the Greek word for star, asteri.
During the conquest of Asia by Alexander the Great, the Greeks were eventually introduced to the unknown cultures and cosmological schemes of Syria, Babylon, Persia and central Asia. It didn’t take too long after that for the Greeks to overtake cuneiform script as the international language of academic communication and part of this action was the transference of astrology from cuneiform to Greek.

In different parts of the world, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a tool for researchers in other science and technology fields, forging collaborations across disciplines. Fabio Cozman, a Brazilian researcher at the University of São Paulo, talks about how his AI research team is helping to break down barriers between disciplines.
"At the Center for Artificial Intelligence, University of São Paulo, our main goal is to produce machine-intelligence research that has a direct impact on society and industry. One of our five core programmes, for example, examines the influence of climate change, biodiversity and mineral resources on Brazil’s Atlantic coastline and the people who live there. A common problem we face is that some researchers coming from other areas just want a programmer. In my opinion, they need to be more willing to share their knowledge and problems, rather than just adopting a ‘come and help me do programming’ approach. My question for researchers who are hoping to collaborate with AI specialists is: are you hoping to have someone who’s ‘good at computers’ help you to do some data analysis, or do you actually need to ask much deeper questions, which AI might be able to help you answer?"

Like A Rolling Stone

Once upon a time you dressed so fine

You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you?

People’d call, say, “Beware doll, you're bound to fall”

You thought they were all kidding you

You used to laugh about

Everybody that was hanging out

Now you don’t talk so loud

Now you don’t seem so proud

About having to be scrounging for your next meal

How does it feel?

How does it feel

To be without a home

Like a complete unknown

Like a rolling stone?

Text 15A3

Life for researchers whose first language is not English may get quite hard. Many academics assume that their research students come to them fully formed, but every student has to learn the culture of their discipline. For those who don’t speak English as a first language, the challenge is especially daunting.

Mentors need to spend more time helping students to understand the conventions of scientific writing and the expectations of various journals. There’s an art to turning a PhD thesis into a journal article. Without guidance, a student will not be able to do it properly.

Institutions need to do a lot more to support and prepare international students. It’s not enough to hire a specialist in academic writing. Such specialists often have backgrounds in the humanities or social science, and students also need assistance from scientists who can help them to write for their specific disciplines.

I sympathize with students who are trying to learn English on top of everything else because I started out in life speaking another language. My family and I were refugees who fled Hungary during the revolution of 1956.

English speakers have become the gatekeepers of science. By keeping those gates closed, we’re missing out on a lot of perspectives and a lot of good research.

Jackson, Mississippi has ‘no water to drink or flush toilets’
By Sam Cabral
BBC News, Washington

Some 180,000 residents in Jackson, Mississippi have “indefinitely” lost access to reliable running water after excessive rainfall and flooding.

Rising floodwaters over the weekend breached the city’s main water treatment facility, bringing it to the brink of collapse. A state of emergency has been declared, and schools, restaurants and businesses have temporarily closed. Raw reservoir water is coming through the pipes, residents were told. Both the city and state are distributing bottled drinking water to residents as well as non-potable water via tanker truck.

Jackson residents are also experiencing low water pressure and have been under a boil-water notice for the past month. “Do not drink the water,” Governor Tate Reeves warned at a Monday news conference. “In too many cases, it is raw water from the reservoir being pushed through the pipes.” Problems at the OB Curtis Water Plant began after heavy rains caused the Pearl River to crest and spill over onto city streets over the weekend.

City hall confirmed on Monday that river water had entered the facility, which treats more than 50 million US gallons (190 million liters) per day. “Adjustments to the water-treatment process are being made and have led to a temporary decrease in water production for some areas,” it said in a statement. “This will remain an issue for the next couple days as we work to refill the tanks.” Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the “very fragile” city-run facility would not turn off its water supply, but officials needed time to change how they treat the contaminated water.

Governor Reeves, who described the plant as long understaffed and poorly operated, said its main motors had gone out and backup pumps too have failed. “Until it is fixed, it means we do not have reliable running water at scale,” he said. “It means the city cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets, and to meet other critical needs.”

Officials have boosted production at a second treatment facility from 20 to 30 million US gallons per day, but water pressure has dropped system-wide. All public schools in Jackson shifted to virtual learning on Tuesday amid the crisis, while businesses and restaurants reported needing to purchase ice and water jugs. The southern state’s capital is more than 80% African American.

Experts say climate change is driving more extreme weather events like the rainfall in Jackson. The heavy rains this August have forced evacuations, inundated homes and washed away roads. “Quite honestly this has become commonplace. We’re experiencing more rain in our rainy season, hotter summers, and colder winters, and it has taken a toll on our infrastructure,” Mr. Lumumba said.
