Text 3: Extreme heat intensifies across south-west US

A heat dome over the US south-west has translated (1) into extreme heat warnings from coast to coast, which continue to affect more than 110 million people.

Temperature records could be broken in as many as 38 cities. In Las Vegas, the intense heatwave is threatening on Sunday to break or tie the city's record high of 117F (47.2C).

It comes as soaring temperatures are also hitting southern Europe and Canada is battling the worst season of wildfires in its history.

Scientists have long warned (2) that climate change linked to human activities will lead to an increase in the severity and frequency of extreme weather events.

Elsewhere in the south-western US, hundreds of firefighters have been battling brush fires in blistering heat and low humidity on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Audit data analytics, machine learning, and full population testing

Technologies are evolving at an unprecedented pace and pose significant challenges and opportunities to companies and related parties, including the accounting profession. In today’s business environment, it is inevitable for companies to react quickly to changing conditions and markets. Many companies are seeking better ways to utilize emerging technologies to transform how they conduct business. We live in an age of information explosion, with technologies capable of making revolutionary changes in various industries and reshaping business models. At present, many companies view data as one of their most valuable assets. They amass an unprecedented amount of data from their daily business operation and strive to harness the power of data through analytics. Emerging technologies like robotic process automation, machine learning, and data analytics also impact the accounting profession. It is important for the profession to understand the impacts, opportunities, and challenges of these technologies.

Specifically, in audit and assurance areas, data analytics and machine learning will lead to many changes in the foreseeable future. Audit sampling is one such potential change. The use of sampling in audits has been criticized since it only provides a small snapshot of the entire population. To address this major issue, this study introduces the idea of applying audit data analytics and machine learning for full population testing through the concept of “audit-by-exception” and “exceptional exceptions.” In this way, the emphasis of audit work shifts from “transaction examination” to “exception examination” and prioritizes the exceptions based on different criteria. Consequently, auditors can assess the associated risk based on the entire population of the transactions and thus enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the audit process.

Unsung hero: how culture influences movies and storytelling

¹ Have you ever been immersed in a film, TV show, or book and thought, "Wow, this feels so Japanese"? (or American, or French, or Chinese…?) There are so many ways our cultures differ when it comes to storytelling! A culture's values and beliefs shape the very foundation of their stories, from their underlying ideas and themes to the individuals who inhabit their worlds.

² Maybe you’re familiar with "The American Dream": the hope of achieving success through hard work, determination, and initiative. Because U.S. culture values self-reliance and personal autonomy, stories often focus on a single protagonist who has to overcome personal challenges and external obstacles to succeed. In the end, the hero is transformed and emerges a stronger, more resilient version of themselves.

³ Even imagining what a hero should be reflects the values and beliefs of each society, and nearly every culture has their own brand of hero! For example, back in Japan, heroes often prioritize the greater good over their own desires, showcasing the importance of duty and self-sacrifice in Japanese culture. In Britain, heroes are often characterized by their honor, chivalry, and intelligence (think: Sherlock Holmes and Hermione Granger). British heroes often showcase their wit, wisdom, and willingness to stand up for what's right. In South Africa, heroes are celebrated for their courage, resilience, and commitment to justice.

New generation of Indigenous activists battle to save the Amazon

Campaigners in Brazil use drones to document work of self-defence teams trying to stop environmental destruction caused by illegal mining

Batista, who belongs to South America's Macuxi people, is part of a new generation of Indigenous journalists helping chronicle an age-old battle against outside aggression. For centuries, non-Indigenous writers and reporters have flocked to the rainforest region to tell their version of that ancestral fight for survival. Now, a growing cohort of Indigenous communicators are telling their own stories, providing first-hand dispatches from some of the Amazon's most inaccessible and under-reported corners.

"It's dangerous work and we suffer a lot when we're out in the field," said Batista, one of about 26,000 inhabitants of Raposa Serra do Sol, Brazil's second most populous Indigenous territory. "But it really gives me strength because I'm showing the reality of our lives to the world."

"It's my job to monitor the territory: to see who's coming in and who is leaving, to find areas being invaded, and to defend the territory because we cannot live without it," said Batista, who was trained by a local Indigenous association, the Conselho Indígena de Roraima, as part of an initiative called Rede Wakywai, which means "our news" in the local Wapichana language.

Colombia deadliest country for environmentalists - report

By Vanessa Buschschlüter
BBC News
Tuesday, September 13, 2023

At least 177 environmental activists were killed across the world last year, a report by the non-governmental organisation Global Witness suggests.
Sixty of the killings took place in Colombia, making it the deadliest country for environmental defenders.
Global Witness says very few of the perpetrators of the killings are ever brought to justice.
The group said in its report that the total number of those killed in the country since it began recording data on attacks on environmentalists in 2012 had amounted to at least 382.
While that makes it the country with the highest number of murders of green activists anywhere in the world, other countries in Latin America also proved deadly.
Brazil recorded 34 murders of defenders of the environment. Mexico 31 and Honduras 11. The Amazon region saw 39 killings, with many of the victims from indigenous communities.
"Research has shown again and again that Indigenous peoples are the best guardians of the forests and therefore play a fundamental role in mitigating the climate crisis," said Global Witness senior adviser Laura Furones.
Global witness said the full scale of the killings was unknown, with a lack of independent monitoring and restrictions on free press in many countries leading to an underreporting of cases.
They have called on governments around the world to urgently address the issue, adding that defenders were also increasingly being subjected to legal efforts to silence them.

Saving What’s Precious

The World Monuments Fund is an organization _____________works to preserve important historical and architectural sites ____________ the world. Every two years, the WMF releases a list of sites ______________ particular danger of becoming ruins, and in 2014, it chose 67 sites in 41 countries. As this is a problem I feel strongly about, I decided to find______________ more about some of these places ___________ my blog.

My first discovery was the Fort of Graca, in Elvas, Portugal. Built in the 18th century, this superb military building played an important role in several wars. However, the building’s strategic importance declined over the years and signs of decay are now appearing. Today, the WMF supports the continued maintenance of the fort, and plans to reuse it as a tourism center.

My research then led me to the Sankore Mosque in Timbuktu, Mali, West Africa. Built in the 14th century, the mosque was integral to the city’s importance as a spiritual and intellectual center in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, the mosque is vulnerable to fighting and rapid urbanization in the region. The WMF hopes to draw attention to this, and to protect this precious monument.

My online journey then took me to the Christ Church Cathedral in Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa. Completed in 1879, the Cathedral’s exquisite design makes its history difficult to take in: it lies on the site of what was, until 1873, a major slave market. The Cathedral is now both a place of worship and a memorial to the slaves who suffered there. Recently, large cracks appeared in the Cathedral’s walls. However, with the help of the WMF, they are now repaired.

A very special site on my list was the Damiya Dolmen Field in Jordan, home to 300 stone tombs which date back to 3600 BC. The Damiya Field is in danger of collapse due to mining in the area. However, thanks to pressure from the WMF, the Jordanian government is taking steps to protect it.

Lastly, I found out about the 19th century Alhambra Palace in Santiago, Chile. It replicates parts of the 13th century Alhambra palace in Spain, and, until a major earthquake hit the country in 2010, existed as a cultural institution supporting artists. The effects of the earthquake, together with old age and weather, made the building unsafe and it is currently closed. The WMF hopes that its involvement with the palace can help it to open to the public once again.
