Experts say the rise of artificial intelligence will make most
people better off over the next decade, but many have concerns
about how advances in AI will affect what it means to be human,
to be productive and to exercise free will

Digital life is augmenting human capacities and disrupting eons-old
human activities. Code-driven systems have spread to more than
half of the world’s inhabitants in ambient information and
connectivity, offering previously unimagined opportunities and
unprecedented threats. As emerging algorithm-driven artificial
intelligence (AI) continues to spread, will people be better off than
they are today?
The experts predicted networked artificial intelligence will amplify
human effectiveness but also threaten human autonomy, agency
and capabilities. They spoke of the wide-ranging possibilities; that
computers might match or even exceed human intelligence and
capabilities on tasks such as complex decision-making, reasoning
and learning, sophisticated analytics and pattern recognition,
visual acuity, speech recognition and language translation. They
said “smart” systems in communities, in vehicles, in buildings and
utilities, on farms and in business processes will save time, money
and lives and offer opportunities for individuals to enjoy a morecustomized future.
Many focused their optimistic remarks on health care and the
many possible applications of AI in diagnosing and treating
patients or helping senior citizens live fuller and healthier lives.
They were also enthusiastic about AI’s role in contributing to broad
public-health programs built around massive amounts of data that
may be captured in the coming years about everything from
personal genomes to nutrition. Additionally, a number of these
experts predicted that AI would abet long-anticipated changes in
formal and informal education systems.
Yet, most experts, regardless of whether they are optimistic or not,
expressed concerns about the long-term impact of these new tools
on the essential elements of being human. All respondents in this
non-scientific canvassing were asked to elaborate on why they felt
AI would leave people better off or not. Many shared deep
worries, and many also suggested pathways toward solutions. The
main themes they sounded about threats and remedies are
outlined in future reports.

These programs have been hailed as the first glimmers on the horizon of artificial general intelligence – that long-prophesied moment when mechanical minds surpass human brains not only quantitatively in terms of processing speed and memory size but also qualitatively in terms of intellectual insight, artistic creativity besides every other distinctively human faculty. Whereas that day may come, one should be allowed its dawn is not yet breaking, contrary to what can be read in hyperbolic headlines and reckoned by injudicious investments. The human mind is a surprisingly efficient system that operates with small amounts of information. Of course, any human-style explanation is not necessarily correct; we are fallible. Hence this is part of what it means to think: to be right, it must be possible to be wrong.

Technologies are evolving at an unprecedented pace and pose
significant challenges and opportunities to companies and related
parties, including the accounting profession. In today’s business
environment, it is inevitable for companies to react quickly to
changing conditions and markets. Many companies are seeking
better ways to utilize emerging technologies to transform how
they conduct business. We live in an age of information
explosion, with technologies capable of making revolutionary
changes in various industries and reshaping business models. At
present, many companies view data as one of their most valuable
assets. They amass an unprecedented amount of data from their
daily business operation and strive to harness the power of data
through analytics. Emerging technologies like robotic process
automation, machine learning, and data analytics also impact the
accounting profession. It is important for the profession to
understand the impacts, opportunities, and challenges of these
technologies.
Specifically, in audit and assurance areas, data analytics and
machine learning will lead to many changes in the foreseeable
future. Audit sampling is one such potential change. The use of
sampling in audits has been criticized since it only provides a
small snapshot of the entire population. To address this major
issue, this study introduces the idea of applying audit data
analytics and machine learning for full population testing through
the concept of “audit-by-exception” and “exceptional
exceptions.” In this way, the emphasis of audit work shifts from
“transaction examination” to “exception examination” and
prioritizes the exceptions based on different criteria.
Consequently, auditors can assess the associated risk based on
the entire population of the transactions and thus enhance the
effectiveness and efficiency of the audit process.

Unsung hero: how culture influences movies and
storytelling
¹ Have you ever been immersed in a film, TV show, or book
and thought, "Wow, this feels so Japanese"? (or American, or
French, or Chinese…?) There are so many ways our cultures
differ when it comes to storytelling! A culture's values and
beliefs shape the very foundation of their stories, from their
underlying ideas and themes to the individuals who inhabit
their worlds.
² Maybe you’re familiar with "The American Dream": the
hope of achieving success through hard work, determination,
and initiative. Because U.S. culture values self-reliance and
personal autonomy, stories often focus on a single
protagonist who has to overcome personal challenges and
external obstacles to succeed. In the end, the hero is
transformed and emerges a stronger, more resilient version
of themselves.
³ Even imagining what a hero should be reflects the values
and beliefs of each society, and nearly every culture has their
own brand of hero! For example, back in Japan, heroes often
prioritize the greater good over their own desires,
showcasing the importance of duty and self-sacrifice in
Japanese culture. In Britain, heroes are often characterized
by their honor, chivalry, and intelligence (think: Sherlock
Holmes and Hermione Granger). British heroes often
showcase their wit, wisdom, and willingness to stand up for
what's right. In South Africa, heroes are celebrated for their
courage, resilience, and commitment to justice.

'monster' by trolls, but I don't care... I'd do it again
(1º§)The decision was not one she took lightly but saw
her accused of being a "child abuser" and "monster" by
trolls on social media. The 34-year-old gave birth to little
Kingsley in January 2022 and instantly noticed he had a
maroon birthmark covering the right side of his face.
(2º§)Medically known as port-wine stain birthmarks, they
are linked to conditions like glaucoma, which can cause
blindness, and Sturge-Weber syndrome, an abnormality
of the brain that causes epileptic seizures and stunts
development. Since Kingsley was diagnosed with both,
Brooke and her partner Kewene, 27, made the difficult
decision to get laser treatment __ the tot's face when he
was just five-months-old. "People didn't understand why
we were lasering him at such a young age," she tells
Fabulous. "We received a lot of hate. "Nobody had really
heard of these types of birthmarks and a lot of people
assumed they would just fade over time, like others."
Brooke, from the Gold Coast, Aus, decided to share
Kingsley's story on social media to raise awareness but
was savagely hounded and mum-shamed by trolls. "We
started receiving comments online calling us child
abusers," she says. "That we need to let him decide
when he is older, that our child would hate us when he
gets older. "That we were sick in the head because it was
purely for cosmetic reasons, that we were faking it, that
he looked awful with or without it, that we were exploiting
him. "I was a monster, I was hungry for fame, we were
horrible parents."
(3º§)Brooke used to respond to trolls out of anger but has
now learnt to block them out, confident knowing laser
therapy was the right choice for little Kingsley. She urged
people to remember that not all birthmarks are "just a
birthmark" and can pose serious threats to a baby's
development. Port-wine stain birthmarks often darken,
thicken and develop vascular nodules, which are
susceptible to spontaneous bleeding or haemorrhage.
The increased tissue mass under the soft tissue of the
birthmark can also lead to further disfigurement of the
facial features and leave large growths on the face. As
Kingsley's birthmark was on his face, he was at a higher
risk of these complications. The tot has to have close
ongoing maintenance due to his conditions, including two
laser sessions a year, as there's no cure. He was
diagnosed with glaucoma and Sturge-Weber Syndrome
soon after birth and started experiencing seizures __
epilepsy in October last year.
(4º§)Kingsley has been rushed to A&E ten times already
this year due to seizures, alongside four laser treatments
and four operations on his eyes for glaucoma. At first,
Kingsley had to get laser treatments every month to get
the best clearance before his skin starts getting exposed
__ the sun and ageing. "We were extremely nervous for
his first laser treatment," Brooke recalls. "Even though it
was only two minutes worth of laser, my heart broke for
my darling boy. "Although we knew it was the right thing
to do, it still didn't make it easier."
(5º§)Brooke describes Kingsley as "the happiest, most
loving and sweetest boy you will ever meet" despite the
pain he has endured. Now one-year-old, the tot's
birthmark has been mostly cleared by the laser
treatments but he is still suffering from its complications -
something he will have to live with for his whole life."I
want to help normalise birthmarks and spread as much
awareness as I can," Brooke says. "So uneducated
people can stop the judgement and also make others
aware of what families like mine are going through. "It's
not 'just' a birthmark."
