As few as 4,000 steps a day can reduce your risk of death, but more is better
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN Published 7:05 PM EDT, Tue August 8, 2023 Walking a minimum of 4,000 steps a day significantly reduces your risk of an early death, while taking 2,337 steps a day will reduce your risk of death specifically from cardiovascular disease but “more is better,” according to a new meta-analysis of studies. “The more steps you walk, the better the effects on your health, and every increase of steps by 500-1000 steps/day may be associated with significant mortality reductions,” first author Dr. Maciej Banach, deputy editor-in-chief of the European Society of Cardiology, said in an email. Anything below 5,000 steps a day is considered a “sedentary lifestyle,” according to the study. The fact that it takes fewer steps to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease is not surprising, said Dr. David Katz, a specialist in preventive and lifestyle medicine who was not involved in the study. “Exercise directly conditions the cardiovascular system, whereas benefit to other systems or conditions is somewhat less direct,” said Katz, president and founder of the nonprofit True Health Initiative, a global coalition of experts dedicated to evidence-based lifestyle medicine. The study’s methods were “robust and state of the art,” and support what doctors often tell their patients, Katz said. “First, any exercise is better than none — with significant cardiovascular and overall health benefit at quite modest levels,” he added. “And for the range of activity that pertains to the public at large — the more, the better!”

The overnight attack left very little time for residents to take shelter.1
— Andrew E. Kramer, Nicole Tung and Victoria Kim2

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, yet again with a missile attack in the early hours of Thursday, killing two women and a child who were not able to get into a closed shelter. Loud explosions were heard just minutes after air-raid sirens sounded throughout the city, waking residents worn out by a month of relentless attacks.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on the Telegram messaging app that an additional 16 people were injured by debris from air defense systems shooting down incoming attacks. Ukraine’s general staff headquarters said Kyiv had been attacked by a volley of 10 Iskander ballistic missiles, all of which were shot down.

The city’s military administration said some of the debris fell on a clinic and an adjacent building. A mother and child were killed minutes after the air-raid alert while trying to get into a bomb shelter at the clinic that was locked, according to Mr. Klitschko and two emergency workers at the scene who declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the news media. The woman and her child were not immediately identified.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his nightly address, was sharply critical of local officials for failing to ensure all bomb shelters were open when sirens sounded. The people responsible for the locked shelter door should be prosecuted, he said.

“Never again should a situation like this night in Kyiv, when people came to the shelter, and the shelter is closed, happen,” he said. “It is the duty of local authorities — a very specific duty — to ensure the availability and availability of shelters 24 hours a day. It is painful to see a careless attitude toward this duty. It hurts to see losses.”

City officials said they had opened a criminal investigation into the clinic and the administrators responsible for operating the shelter there, focused on whether the shelter was properly maintained and why it may have been inaccessible, Mr. Klitschko said. Police officers will now patrol bomb shelters during air raids to make sure they are open, he added.

Later in the day, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office said four people had been detained in connection with the incident: the first deputy of Kyiv’s Desnyansky district, the director and deputy director of the clinic, and a security guard.

A man who lives near the clinic and who gave his name as Yaroslav told the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne that his 33-year-old wife, Natalya, was also killed after she and their 9-year-old daughter, Polina, were unable to get into the shelter.

Yaroslav said people were trying desperately to get in. “People were knocking, knocking for a very long time,” he said, adding, “There were women and children and nobody opened it.”

After what he described as an explosion, Yaroslav found Natalya bleeding alongside a blanket she brought for their daughter and a blue bag carrying family documents, according to the Suspilne report. His daughter, who was not injured, saw what happened to her mother, Yaroslav said.

While Kyiv has been attacked since the first days of the war, the pace and intensity of the Russian assaults over the past month have been jarring even for civilians now accustomed to spending hours in bomb shelters and sleepless nights huddled in corridors. Thursday’s strikes seemed to suggest that the campaign would continue into June.

A Forced Kiss, and a Reckoning With Sexism in Spain1

In the wake of a nonconsensual kiss pressed on Jennifer Hermoso, a star player of the Spanish women's soccer team, by the president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, a significant national conversation has been sparked in Spain about feminism, equality, and abuse. The incident highlights the clash between deeply ingrained traditions of machismo and Spain's more recent progressivism on genderrelated matters.

The unwarranted kiss by Rubiales on Hermoso's lips has become symbolic of the generational and cultural divide between traditional machismo and the more modern push for gender equality. The incident has led to widespread condemnation, even within conservative circles. This event has been referred to by some as Spain’s version of the #MeToo movement.

Spanish prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into whether Rubiales could be charged with a sexual aggression crime. The Royal Spanish Football Federation, led by Rubiales, has faced calls for his resignation due to the controversy.

In a politically charged environment, where the far-right's anti-gender identity stance was rejected in recent elections, Spain's feminist movement has gained momentum. Leading politicians, cultural figures, and voices within soccer culture have expressed support for Hermoso and condemned Rubiales, highlighting Spain's shift towards gender equality.

The incident has triggered a broader reflection on the country's entrenched soccer culture and sexism, prompting discussions about the need for change. Many see this moment as an opportunity for Spain to address and transform the deeply ingrained sexism within maledominated institutions.

Netherlands: Phone ban announced to stop school disruptions

(1º§) Devices including mobile phones are set to be banned from classrooms to stop them from disrupting learning, the Dutch government has announced. The initiative is being introduced in collaboration with schools and is to take effect at the start of next year.

(2º§) There will be some exceptions, including for students with medical needs or a disability, and for classes focused on digital skills. The ban is not legally enforceable but may become so in the future. "Even though mobile phones are almost intertwined with our lives, they do not belong in the classroom," said Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf. "Students must be able to concentrate there and be given every opportunity to learn well. We know from scientific research that mobile phones disrupt this."

(3º§) Various studies have found limiting children's screen time is linked to improved cognition and concentration. Other tech including tablets and smartwatches are also included in the Dutch ban. The government said it would be up to individual schools to agree the exact rules with teachers, parents and pupils - including whether they wanted to completely ban devices __ schools.

(4º§) The scheme is the result of an agreement between the ministry, schools and related organisations. It will be reviewed at the end of the 2024/2025 school year to see how well it had worked and whether a legal ban is needed. The announcement follows a similar decision by Finland last week.

(5º§) Its government announced it would change the law to make it easier __ restrict the use of phones in schools. Other countries, including England and France, have also proposed banning mobile phones to improve learning.
