Global tech giant Google has added 24 new languages spoken by more than 300 million people to its Google Translate platform. “For years, Google Translate has helped break down language barriers and connect communities all over the world,” the US-based company said. It added that it now wants to help those whose languages aren’t represented in most technology. The new languages range from Bhojpuri, which is spoken in northern India, Nepal and Fiji, to Dhivehi, with its estimated 300,000 speakers in the Maldives.
The move now brings to 133 the total number of languages available on Google Translate as of May 2022. The company says the new languages also represent a technical milestone, explaining that they use a machine learning model which learns to translate into another language without ever seeing an example. This can be useful for languages where large datasets of human translations, which can be used to train a computer, are not available. But the company admits that the technology isn’t perfect.
So, will the translations be accurate? Some polyglots have noted problems with the languages already available. “For many supported languages, the translation is not great. It will definitely get the idea across but often it will lose much of the subtlety of the language,” Google Translate research scientist Isaac Caswell told the BBC.
With the new languages, he said, it would be no different. But the people who helped in the research said it was a good place to start. “My impression from other people I have talked to was that it was a very positive thing for them,” Mr Caswell said. In 2020, Google Translate added five new languages to the platform in what was then its first expansion in the past few years.

The reading practices in the English language encompass a variety of reading possibilities and reading strategies including knowledge enlargement in issues which are meaningful to students. Review the chart and the description of a reading activity to answer.
The teacher introduces the topic of past verb forms by means of informal conversation asking students about activities they performed on the last weekend (it is useful to know that the past tense of regular and irregular verbs has already been studied in other previous classes). Then he/she presents students a text, in the genre interview, which students should silently read and employ to fill in the individual chart that they have just been given. The students are told to pay close attention to verb use in the text, so that the chart should be filled with regular and irregular verbs which appear in the text in their past form. Students are also told that not all of the blanks in the chart would be filled. Afterward there will happen the sharing and discussion of the collected information.

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox.     Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal. Monkeypox is not related to chickenpox. Monkeypox was discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. Despite being named “monkeypox,” the source of the disease remains unknown. However, African rodents and non-human primates (like monkeys) might harbor the virus and infect people.
The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970. Prior to the 2022 outbreak, monkeypox had been reported in people in several central and western African countries. Previously, almost all monkeypox cases in people outside of Africa  to international travel to countries where the disease commonly occurs or through imported animals. These cases occurred on multiple continents.

Why can group work be a challenge in monolingual classes?

[1] Firstly, and most obviously, the lack of a need to communicate in English means that any communication between learners in that language will seem artificial and arguably even unnecessary. Secondly, the fact that all the learners in the class share a common culture (and are often all from the same age group) will mean that there will often be a lack of curiosity about what other class members do or think, thus making questionnaire-based activities superfluous. Thirdly, there is the paradox that the more interesting and motivating the activity is (and particularly if it involves a competitive element of some sort), the more likely the learners are to use their mother tongue in order to complete the task successfully or to finish first. Finally, the very fact that more effort is involved to communicate in a foreign language when the same task may be performed with much less effort in the mother tongue will also tend to ensure that very little English is used.

Is group work worth the effort?

[2] Taken as a whole, these factors will probably convince many teachers that it is simply not worth bothering with pair and group work in monolingual classes. This, however, would be to exclude from one’s teaching a whole range of potentially motivating and useful activities and to deny learners the opportunity to communicate in English in class time with anyone but the teacher.

[3] Simple mathematics will tell us that in a one-hour lesson with 20 learners, each learner will speak for just 90 seconds if the teacher speaks for half the lesson. In order to encourage learners in a monolingual class to participate in pair and group work, it might be worth asking them whether they regard speaking for just three per cent of the lesson to be good value and point out that they can increase that percentage substantially if they try to use English in group activities.

[4] At first, learners may find it strange to use English when communicating with their peers but this is, first and foremost, a question of habit and it is a gradual process. For the teacher to insist that English is used may well be counter-productive and may provoke active resistance. If the task is in English, on the other hand, and learners have to communicate with each other about the task, some English will inevitably be used. It may be very little at first but, as with any habit, it should increase noticeably as time goes by. Indeed, it is not unusual to hear more motivated learners in a monolingual situation communicating with each other in English outside the classroom.

Conclusion

[5] If the benefits of using English to perform purposeful communicative tasks are clearly explained to the class and if the teacher is not excessively authoritarian in insisting that English must be used, a modest and increasing success rate can be achieved. It is far too much to expect that all learners will immediately begin using English to communicate with their peers all the time. But, if at least some of the class use English some of the time, that should be regarded as a significant step on the road to promoting greater use of English in pair and group work in the monolingual classroom.

The landscape of the Pantanal is a mosaic of ecosystems with an abundance of water. It is one of the largest perennial flood plains on the Planet and one of Brazil's richest biomes. The Pantanal harbours 656 species of birds, 325 species of fish, 159 mammals, 98 reptiles, 53 amphibians and over 3,500 species of plants. In all, there are over 4,700 species of flora and fauna in the region, including two endemic species and various threatened species, such as the Giant Anteater, Maned Wolf and Hyacinth Macaw. Despite its great ecological importance, the average Brazilian knows very little about the Pantanal.
To celebrate Pantanal Day (12 November), WWF-Brasil created some infographics to showcase the biome and emphasize its importance for Brazil and the rest of the world, and highlight the threats to the region and ways of protecting it.
Despite its importance, the Pantanal faces a number of threats that are common to the three countries where it is located. Currently, only 3.19% of the biome is covered by protected areas, a mere 2.88% of which are strictly protected areas, putting the biome at even greater risk.
These threats are the theme of a study undertaken by WWF-Brasil that monitored land cover and land use changes in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, which showed that the region has already lost approximately 50% of its original cover
