If you’re a chocoholic you may have noticed that your habit has lately become more expensive. The price of cocoa began creeping up in the second half of 2022. Since then it has doubled, reaching an all-time high in January 2024. That steep rise spells trouble for the chocolate business and sweet-toothed consumers alike.

Climate patterns are partly to blame for rising costs. Cocoa is mostly produced by small farmers in West Africa. Ghana and Ivory Coast grow about 60% of the world’s crop. Last season, in 2023, the El Niño weather pattern led to unseasonably high temperatures and rainfall that ravaged crops. Total rainfall in Ivory Coast’s cocoa-growing areas in 2023 was the highest in 20 years, according to Gro Intelligence, a data firm.

This year El Niño has brought severe drought to the cocoa farms, reducing production further. ING, a bank, estimates that this year the gap between global production and consumption will be at its widest since at least 2014. Extreme weather patterns have hit other commodities, too. Droughts in Thailand and India are affecting rice plantations. Torrential rain in Brazil, the world’s biggest sugar exporter, has affected its exports. Besides, other price pressures are specific to the cocoa industry. Swollen-shoot virus and black-pod disease — killers of cocoa trees — spread across Ghana and Ivory Coast during heavy rainfall last year. Tropical Research Services, a research company, estimates that by the end of 2023 the swollen-shoot virus had infected around 20% of Ivory Coast’s cocoa trees.

To the Editor:
Defective airplanes, tobacco products, cars without seatbelts and social media posts: One of these things is not like the others.
The surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy proposes applying warning labels to social media platforms as if they are surely dangerous, like cigarettes and airplanes whose doors fall off during a flight. But there’s another way social media is different: It’s a tool we use to express ourselves. As such, its use is protected by the First Amendment1 .
This isn’t the first time the government has tried to regulate expression in the name of protecting kids. It tried to do so in the 1950s with comics, the 1980s with rock music and the 1990s with video games. We now look back on these efforts as misguided and unconstitutional.

When United States (US) Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy pushed for a tobacco-style warning on social media, he called the mental health crisis in young people an emergency that demanded action without waiting for “perfect information.”
Even among experts, questions remain about the exact role that social media plays in the mental health of children and teens. Authors of a comprehensive new review of research on the topic say there’s still key information missing to know whether prevention programs and interventions will work.
In the study, published recently in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers found an overall link between anxiety and depression in adolescents and the time spent on social media platforms, as well as a link between the types of activities and content they were interacting with. However, the level of impact varied enough to suggest that the findings shouldn’t be generalized to the population as a whole. “In a world increasingly saturated by digital technology, we cannot afford to design prevention programs, interventions, and regulations without knowing that they work for everyone, especially those who are most vulnerable,” wrote the study authors.
The National Academies committee specifically recommend against a social media ban. Despite potential harms — such as unhealthy social comparisons and distracting from other important healthy behaviors such as sleep, exercise and studying — social media can also benefit young people by helping to foster connection with friends and family, and with online support communities.

Surgery in space: Tiny remotely operated robot completes first simulated procedure at the sp

By Taylor Nicioli and Kristin Fisher, CNN February 13, 2024

A tiny surgical robot in residence at the International Space Station completed its first surgery demo in zero gravity on Saturday. The robot, known as spaceMIRA – which stands for Miniaturized In Vivo Robotic Assistant – performed several operations on simulated tissue at the orbiting laboratory while remotely operated by multiple-area surgeons from approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) below in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The milestone is a step forward in developing technology that could have implications not just for successful long-term human space travel, where surgical emergencies could happen, but also for establishing access to medical care in remote areas on Earth, such as in rural areas or military battlefields.

The US goal of pushing exploration deeper into space includes the possibility of journeys that could take years – a round-trip to Mars, for example, could take about two years to complete, according to NASA.

The demonstration on Saturday called for the remote surgeon to control the robots’ hands to provide tension to the simulated tissue – made of rubber bands – and use the other hand to dissect the elastic tissue with scissors. A total of six surgeons performed remote tests with the robot, and each demonstration – dissecting the correct piece of tissue under pressure, a common surgical task, was considered successful.

One of the challenges when attempting to control a robot in space from Earth is latency, or the delay between the time the command is sent and the time the robot receives it. The delay was about 0.85 of a second, said Dr. Michael Jobst, a colorectal surgeon who was part of the demonstration with spaceMIRA on Saturday.
