Based on the excerpt from Virginia Woolf's 'To the Lighthouse': '“So she looked over her shoulder, at the town. The lights were rippling and running as if they were drops of silver water held firm in a wind. And all the poverty, all the suffering had turned to that, Mrs. Ramsay thought. To the Lighthouse, she said to herself, raising her hand as if to let the bird fly free.' In the context of this passage, what does the term 'lighthouse' metaphorically represent in terms of the English vocabulary for objects and parts of the house?

Text 3

The large majority of humankind is more or less fluent in 2 or even more languages. This raises the fundamental question how the language network in the brain is organized such that the correct target language is selected at a particular occasion. Here we present particular behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data showing that bilingual processing leads to language conflict in the bilingual brain even when the bilinguals' task only required target language knowledge. This finding demonstrates that the bilingual brain cannot avoid language conflict, because words from the target and nontarget languages become automatically activated during reading. Importantly, stimulus-based language conflict was found in brain regions in the LIPC associated with phonological and semantic processing, whereas response-based language con whereas flict was only found in the pre-supplementary motor area/anterior cingulate cortex when language conflict leads to response conflicts.

Index terms: event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, interlingual homographs, lexical decision, pre-supplementary motor area and anterior cingulated, response conflict.

The type of activity is popularly called ‘spot-the-differences’. The objective was to promote oral interaction in English by using WhatsApp with their pairs or trios, by recording audio messages, to describe and find at least 8 differences. The activity could be described as an information-gap and/or jigsaw task. In the former, each of the interactants had part of the answers and they needed to share information and negotiate meanings to accomplish the final objective of the activity. In the latter, each interactant held a different piece of information and supplied or requested this information as needed to complete the task (adapted from Salbego and Tumolo, 2020).

Is there a difference between reading on screen and reading on paper in terms of comprehension?

Research published recently showed the different effects of comprehension of reading on paper versus reading on screen. Paper-based reading produced better outcomes. The authors said:
‘Although  there  are  clear  advantages  of  digital-based  assessment  and  learning,   including reduced costs and increased individualization, research indicates that there                                     may be disadvantages as well.’
The researchers raised the question about whether ‘increasing exposure to technology, with its emphasis on speed and multitasking, may encourage a shallower kind of processing that leads to a decrease in deep comprehension in digital environments’.      They found that research studies that had used only narrative texts showed that comprehension was not affected, whether the reading was done on paper or on screen. In contrast, in the studies that involved information texts or a mixture of information texts and narratives, paper-based reading was advantageous.

Reading a text does not imply that it does not have many unitary meanings potentially accessible to all. It rather allows a variety of interpretation by different readers, governed by factors such as purpose, background knowledge, and the relationship between the reader and the text (Nuttall, 1996; Aebersold & Field, 1997). From this perspective, reading is understood to be a complex cognitive process in which reader and text interact to (re)create meaningful discourse (Araújo, 2005).

Brazil is preparing for the biggest heat wave in history, with temperatures above 45°C

Dacio Augustus
November 9th, 2023

Tired of the extreme heat in Brazil? So it's good to prepare, since according to the institute MetSul Meteorology, starting in the next few days another heat wave capable of breaking temperature records will hit the country.

According to information from the MetSouth, the heat wave has already begun, affecting mainly the South and Southeast of Brazil, with atypically high temperatures for the month of November, a period that is already historically hot, but which, in 2023, could see records broken.

Until Friday (10), the most intense heat should be concentrated in the Central-West and in the interior of São Paulo, but from the weekend onwards the mass of hot air increases and the maximum temperatures begin to reach more areas of Brazil, just as it was in September and October. (...)
