For interaction between hull and propeller, we use the thrust deduction factor as a mean of deduct the thrust available at the propeller. According to the book “Principles of Naval Arquitecture” (PNA), the main reason for this deduction is that:

around the stern, the relative velocity of the water past the hull will be less than the ship speed.

the ship stern form a wave pattern and the water particles in the crest of the wave have a forward velocity.

the pressure over some stern areas is reduced by the action of the propeller in accelerating the water flowing into it.

the frictional drag of the hull causes a following current which increases in velocity and volume toward the stern.

around the stern, the relative velocity of the water past the hull will be superior than the ship speed.
