The true potential of technology to change behavior

Technology could successfully change behaviours where decades of campaigns and legislation have failed. With the quantified self already walking among us and the internet of things within easy reach, digital technology is creating unprecedented opportunities to encourage, enable and empower more sustainable behaviours.
If we are to unlock the power of technology we must be more ambitious than simply digitising analogue strategies or creating another communications channel.
The true potential of technology lies in its ability to do things that nothing else can do. In behaviour change terms, the potential to succeed where decades of education programmes, awareness campaigns and product innovation have failed; to make a difference where government policy and legislation has had limited impact.
Using behavioural insights, it is possible to highlight the bottlenecks, drop out points and achilles heels of traditional behaviour change efforts — the reasons why we have failed in the past — and apply the unique possibilities of technology to these specific challenges.

Overcoming our limitations

Luckily, the history of the human race is almost defined by its ability to invent stuff that bolsters its feeble capabilities. That stuff is, of course, what we generically refer to as 'technology'. And in the same way that the internal combustion engine and the light bulb allow us to overcome our relatively feeble powers of motion and perception, so digital technology can be directed to overcoming our relatively feeble powers of reasoning, selfcontrol, motivation, self-awareness and agency—the factors that make behaviour change so difficult.
Herein lies the true potential of technology: not in the laboratory or the workshop, but in an understanding of the behavioural dynamics that define the human condition, both generally and within the context of a specific user-group, market segment or community.

FANS BEG JUSTIN BIEBER TO CANCEL HIS CONCERT IN THE WAKE OF THE MANCHESTER ATTACKS By Alex Riccardi - Yesterday at 4:23 pm

No one should have to live in fear but right now, in the wake of the Manchester attacks, some teens and young adults are scared. And you have a good reason. Bombs went off just minutes after Ariana Grande's performance in England taking the lives of 22 people and injuring many others. But, it's important to remember that concert venues and staff try to do everything they can to keep the audience members safe.
Ariana has officially postponed her "Dangerous Woman" until at least the beginning of June, however, there's no telling if she will cancel more shows after that. In the wake of all of this, fans are encouraging Justin Bieber to pull out of his performances in the U.K. The "Sorry" singer is set to headline at the British Summertime Festival on July 2nd. But, fans don't think it's a good idea.
They have been expressing their concern on social media and even starting the trend, #nopurposetour. One fan wrote, "@scooterbraun please. We're so worried about Justin's Security.... please please cancel Justin's purpose tour #NoPurposeTour." Another fan said, "Justin, please cancel Purpose Tour, we want you to be safe, we want you alive! We love you! #prayersforManchester #NoPurposeTour." This is absolutely heartbreaking. A third Belieber wrote, "#NoPurposeTourUK @justinbieber I don't want you to die, please do something."
Justin nor his manager Scooter Braun have yet to comment on the whole thing. However, we also must note that Scooter is Ariana's manager too. He definitely has his clients' best interest and their safety in mind. Now that Ariana has canceled some of her upcoming shows, Scooter definitely had a role in that decision. While fans may be scared for Justin, we have a feeling he is in good hands. If there was any chance of a threat or immediate danger, he wouldn't do the performance. However, the music can't be stopped because of evil in this world. Katy Perry, The Chainsmokers, and Lorde have all vowed to continue doing their upcoming shows in the wake of this tragedy.

ACTIVE TEENS BUILD STRONG BONES FOR LIFE
Tweens and teens who run, jump and dance may become adults with less breakable bones Sharon Oosthoek - May 8, 2017

As much as a third of an adult’s skeleton will form during adolescence. So the more active someone is during this time, the stronger those bones will become.
Adolescence is a critical time for growing strong bones. That's especially true between the ages of 10 and 14 in girls, and 12 to 16 for boys. As much as 36 percent of the adult skeleton forms during these four years. But how strong those bones become depends on how active someone had been during those formative years. That’s the finding of a new study.
"The bigger the bones children make when they are young, the harder it will be to break when they get older," explains Laura Tosi. She’s a doctor who was not involved in the new work. But she knows the topic well. Tosi directs the Bone Health Program at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

"13 REASONS WHY" ACTORS HAD THERAPY DOGS TO HELP WITH EMOTIONAL SCENES By Hannah Orenstein - Apr 17, 2017

“13 Reasons Why” doesn't shy away from tackling heavy issues like bullying, rape, and suicide. But bringing such dark stories to life can take a toll on actors, which is why the cast had access to cute, cuddly therapy dogs while filming the show.

"They had therapy dogs on set," Dylan Minnette, who played Clay, told PopSugar. "There was a puppy per hour. They really tried to help out. The puppies helped." According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, the pups are "on a mission of sharing smiles and joy."

Dylan also acknowledged that Katherine Langford, who played Hannah, had the most intense experience of them all. "She had the brunt of the emotional stuff," he continued. "I mean, we all have very emotional parts, but this is about her character." In the same interview, Katherine acknowledged the intensity of her character's role and explained why it was so important to bring these tough scenes to life.

"We always read a new script at a table read, and once we hit episode nine, there was silence," she said. "That's when we realized what we were doing was important. That's the moment that's kind of ingrained in my head as, 'This is really important.' We cover so many intense issues. I feel like so much of Hannah's life, especially the last five episodes, is so tragic that you just have to put that shock aside and get through it. It's only been after the show and after wrapping that I've gone, wow, we really did handle some really heavy stuff. I'm really proud of how we handle it, because as you said we don't shy away from them."

Roraima  also differs from other areas of the Amazon, given the timid way in which corporate capital has ventured into the region. Despite its natural riches, there are no large-scale mining or timber operations, and local industries are embryonic. Resulting from the mild stage of capitalist exploration, and relatively recent human occupation, the number and intensity of conflicts over regional resources are substantially smaller.
Migration represented a leading role in the territorial, political and cultural formation of Roraima. During the 1970s and 1980s the state received a considerable influx of migrants from the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, especially from Ceará, Maranhão, Pará and Amazonas states. Overtime migration flows were perpetuated due to the workings of very active migrant social networks, linking very specific communities at origins and destinations. Internally, the city of Boa Vista has played a paramount role attracting immigrants from other states and then redistributing them to other municipalities. The importance of Boa Vista can be grasped from a quick examination of Roraima's urban network, where it exerts the role of a primate city in a highly unbalanced system.
The tremendous influx of migrants over the 1970s and 1980s had a direct impact in the creation of new municipalities, promoting regional development and economic change, which, in turn, fueled renewed migratory flows. The 1990s and 2000s witnessed an augmentation of such moves projecting an inversion in terms of importance of inter and intrastate moves in future years. After all, interstate long distance moves have historically dominated Roraima's migration system; nonetheless, over the last decades intrastate migration has grown at a much faster pace than longer moves.
In the near future Roraima is likely to continue drawing migrants from traditional areas given the organic nature of migrant social networks and its tendency to remain active over time. On the other hand, new migration flows are likely to arise and intensify as regional development will create economic opportunities for many, intensifying formal and informal communication channels. Within this context, the service sector, especially the public administration system will allure urban bound migrants from various Brazilian cities. However, one cannot deny the fact that Roraima remains an active agriculture frontier, where the perspective of acquiring a free plot of land is still viable. Thus, Roraima will still receive large waves of landless peasants in the near future, most likely from traditional source areas. Nevertheless, in order to become a valid alternative for the Brazilian poor, it is imperative that current abandonment rates within colonization projects are diminished, preventing them from turning into a demographic void, while the peripheral areas of the encroaching urban places become increasingly plagued with poverty.
