"Segundo dados do ABIC e do Ministério da Agricultura Brasil é, atualmente, omaior produtor de café "in natura", sendo responsável por 32% do mercado mundial, num universo de 72 países produtores do grão. É também o segundo maior mercado consumidor com média de 4,89 quilos de café torrado por habitante, só perdendo para os Estados Unidos no consumo da bebida. Sendo o café a segunda commodity mundial em valor de mercado, sua importância para o país pode ser traduzida em números: são cerca de 287 mil produtores, distribuídos em 15 (quinze) Estados, num parque cafeeiro estimado em 2,256 milhões de hectares, gerando mais de 8 (oito) milhões de empregos. Os dados apresentados são atuais e refletem a importância do café para a economia brasileira, contudo, conhecer a história desta commodity em solo nacional, permite inferir que grande parte dos avanços econômicos, políticos e sociais do país devem-se ao êxito do chamando "ciclo econômico do café", que se inicia por volta de 1825 quando o Haiti − então maior produtor do grão passa por uma longa crise política, e o Brasil, aproveitando-se desta oportunidade, aumenta sua produção, assumindo posição de destaque no comércio internacional (FURTADO, 1968)."
