English Language Teaching in Brazil: A Gap in Policy,
Problems in Practice
Only three percent of Brazilians are estimated to speak
English despite the status of this language as a
mandatory subject. This fact relates to a gap in foreign
language teaching policy documents: the National
Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB), and
the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN). These
documents for many years did not prescribe the
necessary conditions for English Language Teaching
(ELT) to take place effectively, often focusing on
reading due to a lack of resources or large classes.
LDB mandated the teaching of a foreign language
chosen locally from grades 5 to 12. A recent reform in
2017 has added that English will be the foreign
language taught in secondary school (from grade 6 up)
throughout the country. Previous versions of LDB,
however, did not mandate the teaching of English,
leading to the perception that only in private language
centers could students learn the language.
The effectiveness of ELT in basic education remains
low because policies impact the quality of teacher
education, the availability of pedagogical resources,
and the number of students in the classroom. Most
schools are equipped with basic materials like
blackboards and chairs, but few have audiovisual
equipment installed in every classroom. This reality
shows why many teachers stick to the textbook most of
the time.
Many English teachers in Brazil do not speak the
language fluently because most undergraduate
programs offer a dual major (English and Portuguese).
Often, aspiring teachers enroll because they actually
want to teach Portuguese. Consequently, these
teachers reproduce in their classrooms the approaches
in which they were taught as students, focusing on
grammar-translation rather than modern communicative
methods.
Misconceptions about the language also contribute to a
lack of motivation. Some believe English is only from
England or the USA. To correct this, BNCC (National
Common Curriculum Base) suggests an intercultural
approach to make the study of a foreign language more
socially and culturally relevant. BNCC aims to raise
awareness of the global web in which English is
involved, and it is treating it as a tool for citizenship.

'Simply astonishing': Experts just found a massive
lost civilisation hiding in the Amazon
A civilisation that may have once numbered up to 3
million people has been uncovered beneath the Amazon
rainforest's dense canopy, according to a new study.
Researchers used LIDAR − a technology that fires pulses
of laser light through gaps in the forest canopy to map
the ground below − to survey more than 4,400km of the
southwestern Amazon Basin. The findings were
published in Nature.
Archaeologists now believe the Aquiry civilisation, which
lived in the region from roughly 600BCE to 850CE, may
have been around three times larger than previously
expected. At its peak, their society may have numbered
1.25 −3 million people.
The survey uncovered thousands of geometric patterns
built into the Earth, known as geoglyphs, which take
various shapes including circles and squares and appear
to be connected by straight roads or pathways.
"The scale and precision of these constructions are
simply astonishing," lead author and University of
Helsinki archaeologist, Prof Martti Pärssinen, told BBC
Science Focus.
"Based on LiDAR surveys covering 4,500 km², we
estimate that the entire 183,000 km² Aquiry region may
contain approximately 24,000 to 30,000 earthworks
linked by hundreds of roads, revealing a scale of
landscape modification previously unimaginable for this
part of Amazonia."
Before LIDAR technology was able to peek through the
trees, experts could only investigate deforested areas of
the Amazon − fuelling a mistaken belief that only the
rainforest's sparser regions had been settled by humans,
and not its denser parts.
"These findings suggest that many other regions across
Amazonia may likewise have been far more densely
populated and intensively modified than previously
assumed, challenging the long-standing view of the
rainforest as a largely untouched wilderness," Pärssinen
said.
The next phase of the project is to use the same laser technology to identify tree species that early societies
domesticated − such as those bearing nuts or fruit, and
which continue to grow in the region today.
"We will then investigate how their distribution relates to
different ecosystems, as well as to the locations of
earthworks and ancient road networks," Pärssinen said.
"Simply put, one cannot help but wonder: what else
remains hidden beneath the forest canopy?"

How Will You Get from How Things Are to How Things "Should" Be?
A lot of people get fixated on things that they think "should" happen, but fail to address substantial obstacles in the way. I may even agree with them about what I think "should" happen. But that doesn't mean that it's going to happen. If you're thinking that there is also a danger in being overly cautious or waiting to work out the perfect plan, you're right. That can become a form of procrastination. Acting on an imperfect plan is usually better than waiting until you've worked out every last detail. But at least have some kind of plan that doesn't require a miracle to happen.
The plan that works will also probably not be the plan you started with. You will have to update the plan as you proceed and the situation evolves.
A good model for this process is John Boyd's OODA decision making loop. OODA stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. Actions produce responses that provide new information. New information requires reorientation and new decisions will have to be made that lead to new actions, and the loop repeats.
No big changes happened because a bunch of people sat around complaining about how things "should be."
That's like saying "l should be a millionaire." You could be, but you're going to need some kind of plan to get there that realistically acknowledges the obstacles in your way.
Many of the problems we face today took years to create.
We have inherited a big mess. A lot of things happened that "should not" have happened. Mistakes were made.
But that's life. It's going to throw all kinds of things at you that are sub-optimal. Things you didn't "deserve" or ask for. Cleaning up messes you didn't create is as normal as dealing with bad weather.
Some messes only require a dustpan.
But if you want to clean up a really big mess, you're going to need a plan.

July 16 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly (LLY.N) will buy AtaiBeckley
(ATAI.O) for up to $3.8 billion, the company said on
Thursday, joining a race among pharma majors to
develop psychedelic treatments for depression and other
mental health conditions.
The deal taps into rising interest in psychedelics following
easing regulations under the Trump administration and
reinforces Lilly's push to use windfall weight-loss drug
profits to diversify its product portfolio.
Lilly will gain access to AtaiBeckley's lead candidate
BPL-003, a psychedelic-based nasal spray in late-stage
development for treatment-resistant depression, a severe
form of the illness that does not improve after standard
treatments.
Jefferies' Andrew Tsai estimates BPL-003 could generate
sales of more than $1 billion to $2 billion if it succeeds in
late-stage trials. AtaiBeckley expects initial results from
the trials in early 2029.
Lilly will pay $6.75 per AtaiBeckley share in cash, a
premium of about 26% to the stock's closing price on
Wednesday. AtaiBeckley's shares rose more than 30% in
morning trading.
The offer consists of $2.8 billion upfront and up to $1
billion in milestone-based payments. The companies
expect the deal to close in the third quarter.
"The acquisition aligns with Eli Lilly's expanding
neuroscience portfolio and offers upside potential in large
markets like depression," said Barclays analyst Emily
Field.
Shares of psychedelic drug developers Enveric
Biosciences (ENVB.O) and GH Research (GHRS.O)
were up 6% and 11%, respectively.
The psychedelics industry could reach $12 billion in
revenue by 2034, rivaling the size of branded
antidepressants currently at about $8 billion, said RBC
Capital Markets analyst Trung Huynh.

Drugmakers have shown growing interest in
psychedelic-based treatments for depression and other
mental health disorders.
President Donald Trump's executive order in April
directed U.S. health regulators to speed up reviews of

psychedelic-based depression drug from Gilgamesh
Pharmaceuticals for up to $1.2 billion.
New York-based AtaiBeckley was formed through a

Marauders is an action thriller about a series oÍ
bank robberies with an ulterior motive. Marauders places
emphasis on its plot. The investigation takes Montgomery
and his team (Adrian Grenier, Dave Bautista, and Lydia
Hull) through the remains of a years-old conspiracy,
uncovering puzzle after puzzle as they dig for the truth.
The movie's expansive mystery, moment-to-moment
thrills, and solid pacing make it fine choice for the right
viewer.
However, Marauders' main shortcoming is that it
is too complicated for the type of story it is trying to tell.
Instead of a streamlined investigation with one or two red
herrings and a carefully prepared twist, Marauders tries to
manage a sprawling conspiracy that involves numerous
characters, hidden motives, and coincidences. As a result,
the pieces never combine into a compelling whole, and the
movie's best ideas have no room to breathe.
Marauders is a serviceable pick for fans of the
action genre. The action scenes are adequate, the mystery
is interesting enough to drive the plot, and the cast does
a fine job with the material they are given. Still, Marauders
has a lot of missed potential when it comes to
streamlinging its plot, and it faces stiff competition from
other movies in the genre, making it a hard sell for more
exacting viewers.
For a bank robbery action thriller in a similar vein,
try Den of Thieves, Triple 9, or Takers. For a more personal
crime drama about a bank robbery, try The Town. For a
bank job with a smarter plot, try Inside Man. For an action
thriller with a better conspiracy, try Shooter. For a more
powerful cat-and-mouse game, try Law Abiding Citizen.
