One could imagine that using digital tools was an additional learning experience for the students in itself. Recent literature has also shown that being able to recognize what can be improved requires being trained to do so. As such, students watching themselves on video could not yield possible improvements that could be made, because noticing them also requires a learning process. It could also be hypothesized that compared to university students, elementary school students are less able to seize the benefit of video recording as a peer and self-evaluation tool. In addition, they had to manage their image, which was an extra effort as well, due to intimidation and possible lack of confidence in front of the camera, although students may have a positive attitude toward videos. One could therefore claim, but obviously without being certain, that a related form of learning took place: the management of technologies for learning, and the management of one’s image.

It is impossible to talk about the single story without talking about power. There is a word, an Igbo word, that I think about whenever I think about the power structures of the world, and it is nkali. It’s a noun that loosely translates to “to be greater than another.” Like our economic and political worlds, stories too are defined by the principle of nkali: How they are told, who tells them, when they’re told, how many stories are told, are really dependent on power. Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person.

Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.

When we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise.

A Digital Learning Platform (DLP) is one effective avenue for enhancing language learning. It connects real learning resources with the digital world for teaching and learning. By converting as many physical learning resources into digital formats as possible, the DLP offers an innovative combination of different learning concepts and structures. It can also ensure that different groups of learners have equal access to learning resources through interaction, communication, and knowledge sharing.

DLPs have transformed English language learning with their numerous advantages, although there are also some notable drawbacks. These platforms offer unmatched accessibility and flexibility, enabling learners to access materials anytime and anywhere and to progress at their own pace. They feature diverse resources such as videos, interactive exercises, quizzes, and reading materials, with multimedia integration enhancing comprehension and retention. Personalized learning experiences are supported through adaptive technologies and immediate feedback. Gamification and interactive activities boost engagement and motivation, while cost-effectiveness and global networking opportunities are notable benefits.

However, there are downsides to consider. Digital platforms may lack the personal touch and immediate feedback of face-to-face interactions, potentially reducing social learning opportunities. Technical issues such as internet reliability and online distractions can pose barriers, requiring learners to stay disciplined and motivated. Quality and credibility can vary, raising concerns about fraudulent or poorly designed courses. Assessment challenges, including cheating and assessing practical language skills, also exist. Moreover, self-study can sometimes leave learners feeling isolated and struggling with complex topics. Balancing digital resources with other learning methods can help address these challenges and ensure a more comprehensive language learning experience.

In a high school EFL 50-minute lesson, the teacher selects a short authentic news article on climate change to introduce some reading strategies. The teacher begins by activating students’ background knowledge through a quick discussion in English about environmental issues. Then, she explains two key reading strategies — skimming and scanning — using visual aids and simple English definitions.

Students are first asked to skim the text in pairs to get the main idea, take some notes, and discuss the overall topic. Then, they scan the article to answer questions such as “What year was the article published?” or “Which countries are mentioned?”. The teacher monitors the group work, encouraging students to interact in English and supporting them when needed. Afterwards, the class discusses the purpose of each strategy and how they help understand texts more efficiently.

Based on the description of the lesson plan, which procedure corresponds to the warm-up stage?

Gaia Pope: Family appeals for art in memory of teenager

The family of teenager Gaia Pope are appealing for people to create and donate artwork to honour her memory a year after her death.

The 19-year-old was reported missing from Swanage on 7 November. Her body was found 11 days later near the Dorset coast path.

Her family said as the anniversary of her disappearance approached they were "asking people to make something to show she is not forgotten".

The artwork will be displayed online.

Miss Pope, from Langton Matravers, near Swanage, made an allegation she was raped two years before her death.

Her family claimed an alleged failed police investigation "severely affected Gaia's mental and physical state".

Art, particularly pyrography (woodburning), became a form of therapy for the teenager, her family said.

Her mother Natasha Pope said: "I don't speak about my daughter in the past tense - I utter her name as I always have because I know she is still with me, every moment, in all we're doing.

"Gaia's art and poetry, inspired by the beauty of nature and the strength of femininity, is her way of connecting with her true self. In spite of all she's been through she is not defined by that.

"Our Gaia would want to provide a forum for others to find their voice and create."

Miss Pope's cousin Marienna Pope-Weidemann added: "Some things are so big, run so deep, they can only be expressed through art. Our love and our grief for Gaia feels that way.

"The love we've felt from the community felt that way too. We want to honour that, make it visible, maybe do something to show other survivors, families who's lost someone too soon, that they are not alone."

The family said the project was inspired by the #JusticeForLB social media campaign and want people to share their art on Twitter via #JusticeForGaia.

The #JusticeForLB campaign was set up by Dr Sara Ryan - the mother of 18-year-old Connor Sparrowhawk, who had epilepsy and drowned in a bath after having a seizure in Oxford.

Dorset Police is being investigated over the way it handled the rape allegation and its response to Miss Pope's disappearance.

In the United Kingdom (UK), cyberattacks continue to have serious consequences for government organisations, public services and people’s lives, undermining the value for money of government expenditure in affected services and systems.

The cyber threat to the government is severe and advancing quickly. In response, the Cabinet Office has published and started leading work to implement the first cyber strategy for government.

However, progress is slow and cyber incidents with a significant impact on government and public services are likely to happen regularly, not least because of the growing cyber threat. The government’s cyber resilience levels are lower than it previously estimated. The resilience of the hundreds of ageing legacy IT systems that departments still use is likely to be worse.

To avoid serious incidents, build resilience and protect the value for money of its operations, government must catch up with the acute cyber threat it faces. The government will continue to find it difficult to do so until it successfully addresses the longstanding shortage of cyber skills, strengthens accountability for cyber risk, and better manages the risks posed by legacy IT.
