On the way to investigate the scene of a historic asteroid
collision, a European spacecraft swung by Mars and
captured rare images of the red planet's mysterious small
moon Deimos, the European Space Agency said
Thursday.
Europe's HERA mission is aiming to find out how much of
an impact a NASA spacecraft made when it deliberately
smashed into an asteroid in 2022 in the first test of our
planetary defenses.
But HERA will not reach the asteroid - which is 11 million
kilometers from Earth in the asteroid belt between Mars
and Jupiter - until late 2026.
On the long voyage there, the spacecraft swung around
Mars on Wednesday.
The spacecraft used the planet's gravity to get a "kick" that
also changed its direction and saved fuel, mission analyst
Pablo Munoz told a press conference.
For an hour, HERA flew as close as 5,600 kilometers from
the Martian surface, at a speed of 33,480 kilometers an
hour.
It used the opportunity to test some of its scientific
instruments, snapping around 600 pictures, including rare
ones of Deimos.
The lumpy, 12.5-kilometer-wide moon is the smaller and
less well-known of the two moons of Mars.
Exactly how Deimos and the bigger Phobos were formed
remains a matter of debate.
Some scientists believe they were once asteroids that
were captured in the gravity of Mars, while others think they could have been shot from a massive impact on the
surface.
The new images add "another piece of the puzzle" to
efforts to determine their origin, Marcel Popescu of the
Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy said.
There are hopes that data from HERA's "HyperScout" and
thermal infrared imagers which observe colors beyond
the limits of the human eye - will shed light on this mystery
by discovering more about the moon's composition.
Those infrared imagers are why the red planet appears
blue in some of the photos.
Next, HERA will turn its focus back to asteroid Dimorphos.
When NASA's DART mission smashed into Dimorphos in
2022, it shortened the 160-meter-wide asteroid's orbit
around its big brother Didymos by 33 minutes.
Although Dimorphos itself posed no threat to Earth, HERA
intends to discover whether this technique could be an
effective way for Earth to defend itself against possibly
existence-threatening asteroids in the future.
Space agencies have been working to ramp up Earth's
planetary defences, monitoring for potential threats so they
can be dealt with as soon as possible.
Earlier this year, a newly discovered asteroid capable of
destroying a city was briefly given a more than 3% chance
of hitting Earth in 2032.
However further observations sent the chances of a direct
hit back down to nearly zero.
Richard Moissl, head of the ESA's planetary defense
office, said that asteroid, 2024 YR, followed a pattern that
will become more common.
As we get better at scanning the skies, "we will discover
asteroids at a higher rate," he said.
The ESA is developing a secondary planetary defense
mission to observe the 350-meter-wide asteroid Apophis,
which will fly just 32,000 kilometers from Earth on April 13,
2029.
If approved by the ESA's ministerial council, the Ramses
mission will launch in 2028, reaching the asteroid two
months before it approaches Earth.

Based on theoretical, experimental, and experiential
knowledge, teachers and teacher educators have expressed
their dissatisfaction with method in different ways. Studies
clearly demonstrate that, even as the methodological band
played on, practicing teachers have been marching to a
different drum.
In this sense, the post method condition is established
as a timely response. It signifies interrelated attributes. First
and foremost, it signifies a search for an alternative to method
rather than an alternative method. While alternative methods
are primarily products of top-down processes, alternatives
to method are mainly products of bottom-up processes.
In practical terms, this means that we need to refigure the
relationship between the theorizer and the practitioner of
language teaching. If the concept of method authorizes
theorizers to centralize pedagogic decision-making, the
postmethod condition enables practitioners to generate
location-specific, classroom-oriented innovative strategies.
Secondly, the postmethod condition signifies teacher
autonomy. The conventional concept of method “overlooks
the fund of experience and tacit knowledge about teaching
which the teachers already have by virtue of their lives as
students” (Freeman, 1991). The postmethod condition,
however, recognizes the teachers’ potential to know not
only how to teach but also how to act autonomously within
the academic and administrative constraints imposed by
institutions, curricula, and textbooks. It also promotes the
ability of teachers to know how to develop a critical approach
in order to self-observe, self-analyze, and self-evaluate
their own teaching practice with a view to effecting desired
changes.

Essen: Germany's 'ugly duckling' city success (by Norman Miller)
Thanks to an innovative approach, the Germany city has catapulted from an industrial wasteland to one of
Europe’s greened cities.
Located in the heart of western Germany's long-time industrial Ruhr region, the city of Essen spent much of
the past 150 years marred by pollution, tainted by filthy mines and belching factories and lined by poisoned
waterways. In just one year in the 1960s, a study noted that some 1.5 million tons of toxic dust, ashes and soot
rained down on Essen's inhabitants, along with four million tons of sulphur dioxide. But a remarkable transformation
has seen Essen go from being Germany's ugly duckling to one of Europe's greenest cities.
"Green urban development has acted as a driving force in Essen over the last decade," explained Simone
Raskob, who helped oversee Essen's transformation through a mix of so-called Blue Green solutions: "Blue" for
water-focused initiatives, and "Green" for land-based projects. This two-pronged approach helped catapult Essen
to be declared the European Green Capital for 2017.
Essen's most high-profile project is the transformation of the Zollverein industrial complex – once the
world's largest coal and coke production facility – from toxin-spewing industrial blackspot to an inspiring eco-park
granted Unesco World Heritage status. Inside its giant former coal washing building, the impressive Ruhr Museum
enthrals visitors with displays on the site's history and transformation between towering old machinery. A short walk
away, the Red Dot Design Museum showcases examples of innovative global design in a former boiler house
building repurposed by renowned architect Norman Foster. Ever since mining at Zollverein and the surrounding
region ended in the late 1980s, woodland has spread across the vast site, and its trail-laced expanses are now
home to more than 800 animal and plant species.
Yet, Essen isn't resting on its green laurels and is continuing to add eco-friendly initiatives. A 100km cycling
'super-highway’ is slowly taking shape atop old industrial railways. A string of nature-walking trails have also been
created in and around the city to help boost local engagement with – and appreciation of – natural habitats. All the
trails are easily accessible by public transport.
Among the city's many transformations are the creation of lakes and ponds by harvesting rainwater. But
perhaps the toughest of Essen's solutions involved restoring the River Emscher, considered a biologically dead
"open sewer" since the end of the 19th Century, thanks to the dumping of mining and factory slurry and waste
water. After a two-decade clean-up programme, trout once again returned to the rejuvenated river in 2015. A recent
count found more than 1,000 fish and animal species living along the Emscher, including previously endangered
lapwings, kingfishers and beavers.
Though humans aren't yet encouraged to join the trout in the Emscher, an arena for swimming and boating
hums with activity at Lake Baldeney, a broad expanse of water created behind a 9m dam on the similarly cleanedup Ruhr river. When swimmers splashed here back in 2017, it was the first time bathing had been officially allowed
there for 46 years.
From German eyesore to proud green city, Essen's green-and-blue approach isn't just benefitting outdoor
enthusiasts and the environment but is also providing a shining example of how other cities can look to their
industrial past to embrace a cleaner future.

scientists are trying to find the habits that help people live
longer. In 1970, some scientists talked to 7,000 people in the
United States and got information about ___________ habits.

The scientists learned that the people with the longest
