Contato de povos da Amazônia com idioma espanhol mudou concepção de cores
Muitos membros da sociedade indígena Tsimane, moradora da Amazônia boliviana, aprenderam o espanhol como segunda língua. Com isso, eles começaram a classificar as cores usando mais palavras, segundo revela uma pesquisa publicada em 31 de outubro na revista Psychological Science.
O estudo conduzido por pesquisadores do Instituto de Tecnologia de Massachusetts (MIT), nos Estados Unidos, sugere que aprender uma segunda língua pode influenciar nosso idioma materno, aprimorando as descrições que damos às cores que enxergamos na natureza. A população Tsimane que aprendeu espanhol, por exemplo, começou a distinguir cores que não são usadas nos diálogos dos membros monolíngues de sua comunidade.
Gibson destaca que os indígenas bilíngues começaram a usar seus próprios termos da língua Tsimane para começar a dividir o espaço de cores de maneira mais semelhante ao espanhol. Eles adotaram, por exemplo, palavras de seu idioma nativo para descrever azul e verde, em vez de usarem palavras hispânicas para essas duas cores. Além disso, os Tsimanes bilíngues se tornaram mais precisos na descrição do amarelo e vermelho. Os falantes monolíngues tendem a descrever essas cores englobando-as em muitos tons além do que um falante de espanhol ou inglês incluiria.
O “surgimento” do verde e azul

Como parte do novo estudo, os pesquisadores pediram que indígenas Tsimane realizassem duas tarefas: na primeira, eles mostraram aos participantes 84 fichas de diferentes cores, uma a uma, e perguntaram qual palavra eles usariam para descrever a cor; na segunda, os voluntários viram o conjunto completo de fichas e foram convidados a agrupá-las por palavras de cores. Os indivíduos bilíngues tiveram que fazer as tarefas duas vezes, sendo uma vez em Tsimane e outra em espanhol. Com isso, os pesquisadores descobriram que, ao realizarem a tarefa nesse outro idioma, os indígenas classificavam as fichas coloridas nas palavras de cores tradicionais da língua espanhola.
Já ao fazerem isso em sua língua nativa, os indígenas bilíngues foram muito mais precisos do que os monolíngues: de forma surpreendente, eles começaram a usar palavras separadas para azul e verde, mesmo que sua língua não faça essa distinção. O grupo começou a aplicar exclusivamente “yushñus” para descrever azul e “shandyes” para a cor verde. Embora os pesquisadores tenham observado que as distinções entre azul e verde apareceram apenas nos Tsimane que aprenderam espanhol, eles dizem que é possível que esse uso se espalhe na população monolíngue.
Outra possibilidade, essa mais provável, é que mais pessoas se tornem bilíngues à medida que têm mais contato com as aldeias de fala espanhola próximas.
Os pesquisadores agora esperam estudar se outros conceitos, como referências temporais, podem se espalhar do espanhol para os falantes de Tsimane que se tornam bilíngues.
