Gazette: You make a distinction between “effective writing” and “beautiful writing.” What do you mean by effective writing?
Rogers: Effective writing is practical writing with the goal of getting the reader to understand and potentially respond. The guiding insight for the book is that our readers are not reading what we write carefully.
Gazette: You discuss experiments that support strategies for simplifying writing. Could you summarize a few of those tips?
Rogers: First: Less is more: fewer words, fewer ideas, fewer requests. Omit needless words, so that’s not radical, and it’s costless. Eliminating somewhat-useful-but-not-necessary ideas is harder. It’s a balance between getting the point across and adding too much. Finally, the more actions a message asks of readers, the less likely readers are to do any one of them. Second: Add structure. Most people aren’t reading linearly; they’re jumping around.
Third: Use enough formatting, but no more. We found that people interpret underline, bold, and highlight as the writer saying to the reader, “this is the most important content.” When writers highlight or bold a section in a document or an email, it dramatically increases the likelihood that people read that portion, but it decreases the likelihood that they read the rest of the message.

Semana passada, Paris mais uma vez reuniu a nata do
mundo da moda e mais uma multidão de ricos e famosos,

No meio do burburinho, tem sempre alguma coisa que faz
tanto barulho que fura a bolha da moda e chega até gente
como eu, que não está prestando tanta atenção.
Neste ano, o assunto mais comentado da Paris Fashion
Week não foi um desfile, nem uma festa de arromba. O que
fez a internet parar foi uma bolsa feita de ar (e 1% de vidro).
Trata-se de uma releitura da Swipe Bag, modelo clássico da
marca Coperni, famosa pela maneira inovadora de pensar e
apresentar moda.
Avaliada em R$ 14 mil, a Air Swipe Bag pesa 33 gramas e é
feita de 99% de ar e 1% de vidro. Apesar de inédito no mundo
da moda, o aerogel de sílica, material utilizado na fabricação
da bolsa e considerado o sólido mais leve da Terra, já é
amplamente utilizado pela Nasa para capturar poeira estelar,
uma vez que pode suportar calor extremo e uma pressão de
4.000 vezes o seu peso.
Como apreciadora da moda como expressão criativa e
artística, admiro a Coperni por seu espírito inovador e pela
maneira como é capaz de unir tecnologia e moda. Mas o que
mais me atrai na marca é a habilidade com que,
intencionalmente ou não, faz de suas criações um reflexo do
nosso tempo.
A bolsa de ar me parece a metáfora perfeita para a
maneira como consumimos moda hoje. Com a proliferação de
redes sociais e a moda sendo catapultada a geradora de
assunto e ferramenta de ampliação de visibilidade, vemos
mais e mais gente interessada em pagar caríssimo por
produtos —muitas vezes esdrúxulos, de qualidade duvidosa,
pouco práticos e que provavelmente serão vistos como
obsoletos em alguns meses— apenas para sinalizar acesso e
pertencimento. Mais do que nunca, compramos, portanto,
não a roupa, a bolsa, o sapato, mas o intangível que eles
representam. O rei nunca esteve tão nu e nunca se pagou
tanto por sua capa invisível.

“Após mais de 40 anos de cultivo comercial de pinheiros
(Pinus sp.) em Águas de Santa Bárbara, em São Paulo, a
Estação Ecológica de Santa Bárbara pôs em prática, em 2011,
o plano de manejo para retirar essa espécie exótica do local,
pertencente ao Cerrado. Após esse processo, uma pesquisa da
Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (Esalq) da USP
observou o rebrotamento de espécies vegetais características
do bioma, a partir da sobrevivência de estruturas
subterrâneas durante o longo período de distúrbio ambiental
causado pelo cultivo exótico. Para as pesquisadoras, a
vegetação resistiu tanto tempo embaixo da terra e sem sofrer
processos de decomposição por causa de características
morfológicas típicas de plantas do Cerrado.
O Cerrado, bioma brasileiro, abriga mais de 12 mil espécies de
plantas, e um terço delas são exclusivas do bioma.
Considerado um hotspot (lugar com alta biodiversidade e
grande ameaça de extinção), o bioma perdeu mais de 66 mil
km² entre 2016 e 2023 devido ao desmatamento, segundo o
Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe). Dentre as
ameaças ao Cerrado, o cultivo de vegetações exóticas
comerciais reduz drasticamente a ocorrência e
desenvolvimento de espécies nativas.”
