The genre “letter of complaint” aims to describe a future situation and make suggestions. The language is usually formal and the author should keep an impersonal tone.

The genre “book review” is descriptive and evaluative. The plot of the book is briefly described, usually using present tenses. The evaluation of different aspects of the book, usually using adjectives and adverbs, as well as a final recommendation are typical.

The genre “report” focuses on the description of a current situation. It is usually written in a formal, impersonal and objective style. It is usually organized into sections with headings and the use of bullet points is possible.

The genre “proposal” is factual and very similar in form to the “report”. However, it focuses on a future situation, rather than a present one. 

The genre “magazine article” is informative. Its introduction usually aims to catch the reader’s attention, often with the use of anecdotes and/or rhetorical questions.
