Parent can be:

Mother

A mother is a woman who has conceived, given birth to, or raised a child in the role of a parent.^[1] Because of the complexity and differences of a mother's social, cultural, and religious definitions and roles, it is challenging to define a mother to suit a universally accepted definition. The male equivalent is a father.

Grandparents are the parents of a person's own parent, whether that be a father or a mother. Every sexually-reproducing creature who is not a genetic chimera has a maximum of four geneticgrandparents, eight genetic great-grandparents, sixteen genetic great-great-grandparents, etc. Rarely, such as in the case of sibling or half-sibling incest, these numbers are lower.

Como o amigo citou acima, o termo parents pode se referir a pais (pai e mãe ou seja father and mother) e avós (grandparents) já o termo families retrata os demais membros da família.. irmãos .. primos .. tios e etc.. assim:

“parents” (.21) refers to mother and father. (parents refere-se a mãe e pai) está certo. Parents = pais para o inglês
