QUOTATION

“Another important characteristic of the [National Curricular] Parameters that should not be overlooked is their emphasis on teacher's autonomy. This emphasis can be seen clearly in the fact that no content or method is imposed upon the teachers. What one can find are suggestions and relevant information for teachers to make their own decisions, taking into consideration the context within which they work. In other words, the Parameters do not force any teacher to limit their focus on the teaching of reading, if they believe they can go further than that” (ALMEIDA, 2012, p. 334).

(1º§)Clothing of Ancient Romans were generally simple but that doesn't mean it didn't change through time, although slowly. Roman clothing consisted of toga, tunic and stola.

(2º§)The most commonly used material for their clothing was wool but they also used and produced linen and hemp. The production of these fibers was very similar. After the harvest the fibers were immersed in water and then aired. After that, fibers were pressed mechanically with a mallet and smoothed with large combs. Fibers were then spun and woven on looms.

(3º§)While wool, hemp and hemp were produced on the Roman territory, silk and cotton were imported from China and India. Because they were very expensive, they were reserved for higher classes. From exotic materials, Romans also used wild silk that is collected from the wild after the insect had eaten its way out; and sea silk that comes from the endemic "noble pen shell" that lives only in Mediterranean. Although we think that all roman clothes were white (because of the statues), Romans dyed theirs clothes in purple, indigo, red, yellow and other colors. Leather was used for protection against poor weather (from leather were made heavy coats for Roman soldiers), but its primary use was in footwear and belts. Animal skins were also worn by soldiers. Legionaries wore bearskins while Praetorians preferred feline skins.

(4º§)Toga was probably the most significant item in the ancient Roman wardrobe. It was made of wool and was designed under the influence of the Etruscans and their clothes. Basically the toga was a large blanket, draped over the body, leaving one arm free. Reason why the free citizens were required to wear togas was to differ from slaves who wore tunics. Togas were forbidden for foreigners and fro exiled Romans.

(5º§)Tunic is adopted from the Greeks and was worn by everybody citizens, slaves and non-Romans and by both genres. Wearer's status in Roman society was shown with color and decorations of the tunic. It was worn as a shirt or a gown or as undergarments.

(6º§)Stola was traditional clothing of Roman women made of linen, cotton or wool. It was reserved for women since 2nd century BC when the toga started to be clothing reserved for men. It was a long, pleated dress, worn over a tunic. It generally had no sleeves but there were versions with shorter and longer sleeves. Sleeveless version was fastened by clasps at the shoulders. It also had belts or two that held stola.

(7º§)From the late Republic to the end of the Western empire, clothing of Ancient Rome slowly changed. After the Diocletian's reforms, clothing worn by soldiers and non-military members of government became very decorated. Their tunics and cloaks were decorated with woven or embellished strips and circular roundels. Silk was used more than ever. Bureaucrats started using pieces of clothing that were before reserved only for military. People started wearing even the trousers which was before that considered as a sign of cultural decay because only barbarians wore trousers at that time.

Jackson, Mississippi has ‘no water to drink or flush toilets’
By Sam Cabral
BBC News, Washington

Some 180,000 residents in Jackson, Mississippi have “indefinitely” lost access to reliable running water after excessive rainfall and flooding.

Rising floodwaters over the weekend breached the city’s main water treatment facility, bringing it to the brink of collapse. A state of emergency has been declared, and schools, restaurants and businesses have temporarily closed. Raw reservoir water is coming through the pipes, residents were told. Both the city and state are distributing bottled drinking water to residents as well as non-potable water via tanker truck.

Jackson residents are also experiencing low water pressure and have been under a boil-water notice for the past month. “Do not drink the water,” Governor Tate Reeves warned at a Monday news conference. “In too many cases, it is raw water from the reservoir being pushed through the pipes.” Problems at the OB Curtis Water Plant began after heavy rains caused the Pearl River to crest and spill over onto city streets over the weekend.

City hall confirmed on Monday that river water had entered the facility, which treats more than 50 million US gallons (190 million liters) per day. “Adjustments to the water-treatment process are being made and have led to a temporary decrease in water production for some areas,” it said in a statement. “This will remain an issue for the next couple days as we work to refill the tanks.” Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the “very fragile” city-run facility would not turn off its water supply, but officials needed time to change how they treat the contaminated water.

Governor Reeves, who described the plant as long understaffed and poorly operated, said its main motors had gone out and backup pumps too have failed. “Until it is fixed, it means we do not have reliable running water at scale,” he said. “It means the city cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets, and to meet other critical needs.”

Officials have boosted production at a second treatment facility from 20 to 30 million US gallons per day, but water pressure has dropped system-wide. All public schools in Jackson shifted to virtual learning on Tuesday amid the crisis, while businesses and restaurants reported needing to purchase ice and water jugs. The southern state’s capital is more than 80% African American.

Experts say climate change is driving more extreme weather events like the rainfall in Jackson. The heavy rains this August have forced evacuations, inundated homes and washed away roads. “Quite honestly this has become commonplace. We’re experiencing more rain in our rainy season, hotter summers, and colder winters, and it has taken a toll on our infrastructure,” Mr. Lumumba said.

Mo Farah says he was trafficked to the U.K. and forced into child labor
July 12, 20229:50 AM ET Mo Farah says he was trafficked to the U.K. and forced into child labor : NPR

Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah says he was trafficked to the U.K. under a false name and forced into child labor, revealing stunning details about the painful path that culminated in him being awarded a knighthood.
“Most people know me as Mo Farah, but it’s not my name — or, it’s not the reality,” Farah said in a new documentary about the track star.
“The real story is, I was born in Somaliland, north of Somalia, as Hussein Abdi Kahin,” he added.
Farah has previously said he came to the U.K. as a young child with his parents, fleeing the war in Somalia. But he now says his father died when Farah was four years old, and that he was soon separated from his mother and other relatives.
“I was brought into the U.K. illegally under the name of another child, called Mohammed Farah,” he said. At the time, he was around 8 or 9 years old.
The documentary, made by the BBC and Red Bull Studios, includes footage of visa documents that Farah says were faked, bearing his photo and another child’s name.
“I know I’ve taken someone else’s place. And I do wonder, what is Mohammed doing now?” he said in the documentary, clips of which are posted on the BBC’s website.
The woman who brought Farah into the U.K. had told him he would soon join his relatives in the country. He carried a piece of paper with his family members’ contact information on it. But after arriving, the woman tore up the paper and threw it in the trash.
“The lady, what she did wasn’t right,” Farah said.
Farah described being exploited and threatened, as he worked in the household of another family. There, he was forced to cook and clean and tend to other children — and he was told to keep his mouth shut about his true origin, or the authorities would take him away.
“Often, I would just lock myself in the bathroom and cry, and nobody’s there to help. So after a while, I just learned not to have that emotion,” he said.
The celebrated runner says his unique abilities and luck are all that saved him from trafficking and forced servitude. When he was finally allowed to attend school, his talents quickly drew the attention of a teacher who connected with him — and who then helped Farah get placed into a foster home with a different Somali family.
Farah, who received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth in 2017, says he’s speaking out now about what he went through to raise public awareness about other people who are caught in the same plight. The BBC says it attempted to contact the woman who brought Farah into the U.K. for her side of the story, but she hasn’t replied.

In 1972 a British linguist, D. A. Wilkins, proposed a functional or communicative definition of language that could serve as a basis for developing communicative syllabuses for language teaching. Wilkins’s contribution was an analysis of the communicative meanings that a language learner needs to understand and express. Rather than describe the core of language through traditional concepts of grammar and vocabulary, Wilkins attempted to demonstrate the systems of meanings that lay behind the communicative uses of language. He described two types of meanings: notional categories (concepts such as time, sequence, quantity, location) and categories of communicative function (requests, denials, offers, complaints).

Proponents of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) see it as an approach that aims to (a) make communicative competence the goal of language teaching and (b) develop procedures for the teaching of language skills that acknowledge the interdependence of language and communication. Its comprehensiveness thus makes it different in scope and status from any of the earlier traditions in language teaching. There is no single text or authority on it, nor any single model that is universally accepted as authoritative. What is essential in all of them is that at least two parties are involved in an interaction of some kind where one party has an intention and the other party expands or reacts to the intention.
