Life just might exist on Mars after all
The red planet may have once been home to an
abundance of microbes. New studies suggest it's possible
that some hardy microbes managed to survive underground
in a frozen state.
About 3.5 billion years ago, two of the planets that
orbited the sun may have had biospheres of similar bulk.
One, Earth, evolved in a way that allowed life to flourish and
splinter into endless forms most beautiful. Mars, the other
world, followed a different path.
Today the Martian surface is hostile to life as we
know it, but as this scientific story goes, Mars may have once
hosted a rich abundance of microbes. Residing in the
planet’s briny underworld and shielded from the lethal
radiation that bathes the surface, these organisms could
have grown in nooks and ____________, multiplying until
their collective heft rivaled Earth’s cache of life. Called
methanogens, Mars’s microbes would have inhaled
atmospheric hydrogen and carbon dioxide and exhaled
methane gas - and in a twist, they may have turned out to be
their own worst enemy.
Over time, their growing, insatiable appetite would
have robbed the Martian atmosphere of hydrogen - a
powerful greenhouse gas during the planet’s early days -
ultimately casting a deadly freeze over the planet and
driving microbial populations into deeper, warmer crannies.
How long those burrowing microbes could have survived in
the deep is unknown. It’s possible they were only a shortlived flash of life on an otherwise sterile world.
“Maybe extinction is the cosmic default of life in the
universe,” says Boris Sauterey of the Institut de Biologie de
l’Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. “It’s not the process of
life ____________ that is limiting; it’s life maintaining itself
that is limiting.”
But perhaps, more than 30 feet beneath the surface
and encased in ice, these ancient single-celled organisms
achieved a state of dormancy - a sort of cryopreserved
slumber, ready to perk up when more life-friendly conditions
arise.
The Martian interior may not be as lifeless as its
face. It could host a world of alien organisms that are
capable of waiting thousands of years between each turn of
their metabolic engines.
This ____________ may sound farfetched, but
recent results from scientists modeling the habitability of
ancient Mars and studying the hardiness of microbes in labs
and beneath our own planet’s surface all point in the same
direction: It’s a long shot, but it’s possible life evolved on
Mars and still exists. And scientists may just find signs of that
life when meteors barrel into Mars and excavate buried
layers of ice, or when new spacecraft arrive to plumb this
underground realm.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia targeted the Ukrainian
capital, Kyiv, yet again with a missile attack in the
early hours of Thursday, killing two women and a
child who were not able to get into a closed
shelter. Loud explosions were heard just minutes
after air-raid sirens sounded throughout the city,
waking residents worn out by a month of
relentless attacks.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on the
Telegram messaging app that an additional 16
people were injured by debris from air defense
systems shooting down incoming attacks.
Ukraine’s general staff headquarters said Kyiv
had been attacked by a volley of 10 Iskander
ballistic missiles, all of which were shot down.
The city’s military administration said some of the debris fell on a clinic and an adjacent
building. A mother and child were killed minutes
after the air-raid alert while trying to get into a
bomb shelter at the clinic that was locked,
according to Mr. Klitschko and two emergency
workers at the scene who declined to be named
because they were not authorized to speak to the
news media. The woman and her child were not
immediately identified.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his nightly
address, was sharply critical of local officials for
failing to ensure all bomb shelters were open
when sirens sounded. The people responsible
for the locked shelter door should be prosecuted,
he said.
“Never again should a situation like this
night in Kyiv, when people came to the shelter,
and the shelter is closed, happen,” he said. “It is
the duty of local authorities — a very specific duty
— to ensure the availability and availability of
shelters 24 hours a day. It is painful to see a
careless attitude toward this duty. It hurts to see
losses.”
City officials said they had opened a
criminal investigation into the clinic and the
administrators responsible for operating the
shelter there, focused on whether the shelter was
properly maintained and why it may have been
inaccessible, Mr. Klitschko said. Police officers will
now patrol bomb shelters during air raids to make
sure they are open, he added.
Later in the day, the Ukrainian prosecutor
general’s office said four people had been
detained in connection with the incident: the first

guard.
A man who lives near the clinic and who
gave his name as Yaroslav told the Ukrainian
public broadcaster Suspilne that his 33-year-old
wife, Natalya, was also killed after she and their
9-year-old daughter, Polina, were unable to get
into the shelter.
Yaroslav said people were trying
desperately to get in. “People were knocking,
knocking for a very long time,” he said, adding,
“There were women and children and nobody
opened it.”
After what he described as an explosion,
Yaroslav found Natalya bleeding alongside a
blanket she brought for their daughter and a blue
bag carrying family documents, according to the
Suspilne report. His daughter, who was not
injured, saw what happened to her mother,
Yaroslav said.
While Kyiv has been attacked since the first
days of the war, the pace and intensity of the
Russian assaults over the past month have been
jarring even for civilians now accustomed to
spending hours in bomb shelters and sleepless nights huddled in corridors. Thursday’s strikes
seemed to suggest that the campaign would
continue into June.

What is blended learning and how does it work?

Blended learning as an approach is not new. Indeed, the practice of combining (blending) different learning
approaches and strategies is not new. Distance learning courses have long combined blended learning through a mix
of self-access content (print/video/TV/ radio) and face-to-face/telephone support. 'Traditional' courses have always
combined (and some still do) a variety of delivery modes that combine content such as lectures, seminars, tutorials,
workshops and group work to give learners a range of learning opportunities. And of course, 'good teachers will
always use more than one method or approach in their teaching, and good learners will always combine different
strategies in their learning' (Marsh, 2012:3*).
So we could say that the term 'blended learning' refers to every time teachers mix different media (e.g. print, audio,
and video) with classroom interaction, maximising authentic input in order to support learners' output and skills
development. As such, blended learning has more or less always existed, although the term itself is a mere 15 years
old at most, and is now understood to mean a rich, supportive learner-centred learning environment where the 'right
blend' is synonymous with effective learning (and teaching).
What is new is that today, technology combines all the different media within one environment: online. The online
space facilitates learner–learner interaction, encourages incidental and exploratory learning and allows learners and
teachers to stay connected outside the classroom, if they so wish. Learners can benefit from the fact that space and
distance do not matter any more. Teachers and educationalists are now understanding more and more that, with the
'right blend', teachers can offer a much richer, supportive learning environment, learning opportunities increase,
learning becomes more effective and the learning process becomes more enjoyable.
There are many definitions for blended learning, but they all have the following in common: they refer to two
different learning environments — face-to-face (synchronous) and online (asynchronous); and they refer to combining
those two learning environments in a complementary way to deliver a programme of study so that learners can be
supported both within the classroom environment and outside of it. In other words, the term blended learning refers to
any programme of study that is delivered by appropriately combining both synchronous interactive study (usually
face-to-face) and asynchronous (individual) study (usually online).
We could go further and say, 'It's in the blend!' That is, the key to a successful blended learning approach is to use the
strengths of each medium appropriately, combining the two different learning environments in an integrated way so
that each medium complements one another: the classroom environment being used for what it does best, such as
introducing new topics, explaining important language points or for meaningful communicative activities, and the
online environment being used for what it does best, such as preparing for the next topic (by watching a video/reading
a text, etc.), and/or practising and consolidating what has been learnt in class or for extra practice. Both modes of
delivery put the learner at the centre of the learning process.
