(§ 1) A TRAVEL expert has revealed you should never let
your kids bring a bag on the plane if you want a
stress-free journey.
(§ 2) Experienced flyer, Vanessa Grant recommends
parents don't let their kids take a bag with them after
sharing her recent experience of travelling with her kids -
aged 8 and 11.
(§ 3) "Smart packing is what really saved us," she said.
(§ 4) Vanessa did two long-haul flights with her family
from Canada to Indonesia which went smoothly because
the kids didn't have bags, she claims.
(§ 5) It is important to "instil a sense of responsibility" in
kids however, it is not worth the stress of tracking down a
lost backpack __ a busy international airport, according
to the travel expert.
(§ 6) Vanessa explained: "The stakes are just too high
and even replacing a charging cord can be pricey at a
duty-free shop, let alone a whole backpack's worth of
stuff."
(§ 7) It is also important to bring the right type of carry-on
when travelling with your family, to make your life a lot
easier.
(§ 8) A small rolling suitcase is perfect for long-haul
flights and "is like the clown car of carry-ons".
(§ 9) Vanessa added: "It fits a change of clothes for three
of us, plus toiletries and some snacks."
(§ 10) Instead of storing your carry-on in the overhead
bins you should put it __ the seat of your shortest child so
they'll be able to rest their feet on it, Vanessa
recommends.

complaining as it is "uncomfortable to have your legs
hanging for hours".
(§ 12) Packing a change of clothes for everyone will
ensure you have a smoother journey, according to the
experienced flyer.

(§ 15) "Luckily most airlines give passengers a little
package including a toothbrush and toothpaste, ear

Climate crisis is making days longer,
study finds
Melting of ice is slowing planet’s rotation and
could disrupt internet traffic, financial
transactions and GPS. The climate crisis is
causing the length of each day to get longer,
analysis shows, as the mass melting of polar ice
reshapes the planet.
The phenomenon is a striking demonstration of
how humanity’s actions are transforming the
Earth, scientists said, rivalling natural processes
that have existed for billions of years. The
change in the length of the day is on the scale of
milliseconds but this is enough to potentially
disrupt internet traffic, financial transactions and
GPS navigation, all of which rely on precise
timekeeping.
The length of the Earth’s day has been steadily
increasing over geological time due to the
gravitational drag of the moon on the planet’s
oceans and land. However, the melting of the
Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets due to
human-caused global heating has been
redistributing water stored at high latitudes into
the world’s oceans, leading to more water in the
seas nearer the equator. This makes the Earth
more oblate – or fatter – slowing the rotation of
the planet and lengthening the day still further.
The planetary impact of humanity was also
demonstrated recently by research that showed
the redistribution of water had caused the
Earth’s axis of rotation – the north and south
poles – to move. Other work has revealed that
humanity’s carbon emissions are shrinking the
stratosphere.
“We can see our impact as humans on the
whole Earth system, not just locally, like the rise
in temperature, but really fundamentally, altering
how it moves in space and rotates,” said Prof
Benedikt Soja of ETH Zurich in Switzerland.
“Due to our carbon emissions, we have done
this in just 100 or 200 years. Whereas the
governing processes previously had been going
on for billions of years, and that is striking.”

Teaching methods keep changing with the times,................... the blackboard of the old days ........... electronic teaching today. Mr. Kam, physics instructor
the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is one of
those who has changed ......... the times.
Mr. Kam employs a two-pronged approach. First, he
uses multimedia teaching materials during lectures.
Second, he arranges internships for undergraduates.
These can take the form of learning assistantships at
the university or teaching assistantships at secondary
schools, and also there’s always the odd science project at the Space Museum.
The initiatives have earned him the Faculty Exemplary
Teaching Award 2020. A CUHK alumnus, he is grateful
for the chance to teach at the university after earning
his doctoral degree there. His teaching position actually represents the fulfillment of a dream, for the status
of professors during his days as a university student
was extremely high and he could meet them only during lectures.
After being a teacher for 10 years, Mr. Kam has found
no apparent regression in the learning abilities of students, but he believes teachers should not just force
knowledge on students - they have to pay careful
attention to their needs too.
The multimedia materials that Mr. Kam uses to illustrate his area of interest includes animation and
video clips. He encourages students to read popular
astronomy magazines and share any note-worthy
content they find. Mr. Kam also gets his undergraduates to help prepare students sitting for physics
papers in public exams or to help out on research
projects undertaken by meteorological officers at the
observatory.
He also arranges for his undergraduates to teach students from other faculties during physics liberal studies classes through talks and star-gazing expeditions.
Such responsibilities serve two greater purposes.
First, undergraduates become even more motivated
to learn when they find out they have to guide other
students. Second, physics students are, unlike arts students, not at their best when called upon to express
themselves. Acting as assistants allows them to practice their skills and build up their self- confidence.
I asked Mr. Kam what he found most satisfying in
teaching.
And the answer is obvious. It is the deep friendship he
forms with students. Mr. Kam says many former students still come back to see him occasionally despite
being busy parents. He draws considerable satisfaction from seeing his students grow into mature adults.
For Mr. Kam, the best teachers will never find extracurricular activity a burden because the good work that is
done today plants the seed for future generations.

Carmen Miranda
When Carmen Miranda performed, audiences remarked
on her vivacity and sparkle. Her voice and stage
presence captivated people and made her a favorite star,
first in Brazil, and later in the United States. Miranda was
born in 1909 in northern Portugal, but her family
immigrated to Brazil when she was very young. She
began her career as a singer for Brazilian radio stations,
but she very quickly leapt to stardom, and began acting
in movies as well. Her fame and talent caught the
attention of a Broadway theater owner and producer, Lee
Shubert. He convinced her to join his 1939 production of
The Streets of Paris and, with the support of the Brazilian
government, Miranda and her band went to New York
City as goodwill ambassadors to the United States.
Carmen Miranda was highly successful in the United
States, and in addition to major theater appearances, she
acted in movies and sang in nightclubs. At the peak of
her Hollywood career, she was the highest paid female
performer in the United States. However, her success
came with drawbacks. Her first major role in a Hollywood
film was as an exotic, volatile stereotype of a Latina, and
thereafter she was typically typecast in such roles. Her
parts often genericized Latin American cultures and
played to stereotypes. This was very well received by
American audiences, and fed the interests of the United
States' Good Neighbor policy in the 1940s, but it angered
critics in South and Central America. On a return trip
home to Brazil in 1940, she was poorly received, and was
actually booed off a stage at a charity event she
arranged, a drastic change from the adoration she was
given before her departure for America. She did not
return to Brazil until shortly before she died in 1955.
Miranda's greatest legacy, perhaps, is the popularization
of the samba. The samba was created by Afro-Latin
American musicians with roots in the Carnival
celebrations that blended European Catholic traditions
with African ones. It was created and originally played in
poorer Afro-Latin communities but was increasingly
picked up by middle class performers. Miranda was
sometimes criticized by whites for performing a form of
music they considered vulgar because of its origins, while
Afro-Latin Americans have criticized her for appropriating
their musical traditions without regard for their culture.
Nonetheless, her talent was considerable, and her fame
brought samba into the spotlight with her. Miranda
popularized the samba first in Brazil on the radio and in
films, and later in the United States with her
performances there, and the samba has had
considerable influences on a wide range of musicians
and musical forms since.

ELF: English as a lingua franca
The Vienna Oxford International Corpus of English
(VOICE), a collection of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF)
currently under construction, defines lingua franca as an
additionally acquired language system that serves as a
means of communication for speakers from different speech
communities, who use it to communicate with each other but
for whom it is not their native language.
Early findings from the VOICE corpus tentatively identify
a number of features which point to systematic lexicogrammatical differences between native-speaker English and
ELF, for example dropping the third person present tense ‘s’
(e.g. she wear), omitting definite and indefinite articles,
insertion of prepositions (e.g. can we discuss about this
issue). These features are not a threat to comprehension, as
they involve typical errors that most English teachers would
correct and remediate. However, Seidlhofer (2004) points out
that they appear to be generally unproblematic and do not
cause an obstacle to communicative success in ELF.
The work of Jenkins (1996, 2000, 2004, 2005) has also
been very influential in relation to the teaching of pronunciation
for ELF. Her research finds that a number of items common to
most native-speaker varieties of English were not necessary
in successful ELF interactions; for example, the substitution
of voiceless and voiced th with /t/ or /s/ and /d/ or /z/ (e.g.
think became sink or tink, and this became dis or zis). Jenkins
argues that such features occur regularly in ELF interactions
and do not cause intelligibility problems.
Problems may arise in the (perhaps unfair) equation
between a reduced or ‘stripped down’ ELF syllabus and an
impoverished experience of the L2. Indeed, it could be argued
that learners of any language always end up producing less
than the input they are exposed to, and that if that input itself
is deliberately restricted, then even less will be the outcome.
