Big Data Begins to Crack the Case of Endometriosis
Records from millions of patients at University of
California health centers found correlations between
endometriosis, one of the most common diseases in
women, and a bounty of other diseases.

Scientists at UC San Francisco have found that
endometriosis — a painful chronic disease that often
goes undiagnosed yet is estimated to affect as many as
200 million women worldwide — frequently occurs
alongside conditions like cancer, Crohn's disease, and
migraine.
The research could improve diagnosis and, ultimately,
treatments for endometriosis, preventing women from
having to go on long diagnostic journeys in which they
are told that nothing is wrong with them.
The study, which appeared in Cell Reports Medicine on
July 31, used computational methods developed at
UCSF to analyze anonymized patient records collected at
the University of California's six health centers.
"We now have both the tools and the data to make a
difference for the huge population that suffers from
endometriosis," said Marina Sirota, PhD, the interim
director of the UCSF Bakar Computational Health
Sciences Institute (BCHSI), professor of pediatrics, and
senior author of the paper. "We hope this can spur a sea
change in how we approach this disorder."
"The impact on patients' lives is huge"
Endometriosis, often called 'endo,' occurs when the
endometrium, the blood-rich tissue that grows in the
uterus before being expelled each month during
menstruation, spreads to other nearby organs. It causes
chronic pain and infertility. It is estimated that nearly 10%
of women worldwide suffer from it.
"Endo is extremely debilitating," said Linda Giudice, MD,
PhD, MSc, a physician-scientist in the Department of
Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at
UCSF and co-author of the paper. "The impact on patients' lives is huge, from their interpersonal
relationships to being able to hold a job, have a family,
and maintain psychological wellbeing."
The gold standard to diagnose endometriosis is surgery
to find endometrial tissue outside of the uterus, and it is
mainly treated with hormones to suppress the menstrual
cycle, or surgery to remove the excess tissue.
But not everyone responds to hormonal therapy, which
can have debilitating side effects. Even after surgery, the
condition can flare up. Removal of the uterus is a
last-ditch measure that is usually reserved for older
women; but some women continue to experience pain
even after a hysterectomy.
Giudice partnered with Sirota to leverage the UC health
system's anonymized patient data against endo, which
can vary dramatically across patients. Both Giudice and
Sirota are principal investigators at the UCSF-Stanford
Endometriosis Center for Discovery, Innovation, Training
and Community Engagement (ENACT).
"This data is messy; it was not collected for research
purposes but for the real, human purpose of helping
women who need care," Sirota said. "We had the rare
chance to rigorously assess how endometriosis presents
across UCSF's patient population and then ask whether
these observations held true with patients seen at the
other UC health centers."
Data connects the dots for understanding endometriosis
Using algorithms developed for the task, Umair Khan, a
bioinformatics graduate student in Sirota's lab and first
author of the paper, hunted for connections linking
endometriosis with the rest of each patient's health
history.
He compared endo patients with patients who did not
have it, and categorized the patients with endo into
groups based on shared health histories. He mapped his
findings from the UCSF data against the rest of the UC's
health data to see if they held up across California.
"We found over 600 correlations between endometriosis
and other conditions," Khan said. "These ranged from
what we already knew or suspected, like infertility,
autoimmune disease, and acid-reflux, to the unexpected,
like certain cancers, asthma, and eye-related diseases."
Some patients had migraines, bolstering previous studies
suggesting that migraine drugs might help treat
endometriosis.
"In the past, studies like this would have been nearly
impossible," said Tomiko Oskotsky, MD, an investigator
at ENACT, associate professor in UCSF BCHSI, and
co-author of the paper. "It was only 12 years ago that
de-identified electronic health records became available
at this scale."
The study supports the growing understanding of
endometriosis as a "multi-system" disorder — a disease
arising from dysfunction throughout the body.
"This is the kind of data we need to move the needle,
which hasn't moved in decades," Giudice said. "We're finally getting closer to faster diagnosis and, eventually,
we hope, tailored treatment for the millions of women
who suffer from endometriosis."

Adolescence can be rife with anxieties and challenges, but today’s youth face unique threats on a scale encountered by no previous generation, according to an exhaustive new report on their health and wellbeing.
More than one billion people aged 10 to 24 are at risk of poor health outcomes by 2030, which is at least half the global adolescent population, concluded the report published on Tuesday in the Lancet, a leading medical journal. Adolescents are experiencing rising rates of obesity and mental health struggles, while also grappling with the influence of digital technologies and a destabilized global climate.
“Even I was shocked by what some of these numbers and future predictions look like,” says Sarah Baird, a professor of global health and economics at the George Washington University and co‑chair of the Lancet Commission that produced the report. “It’s clear we’re already in, and going to be increasingly in, a crisis of bad health among young people.”
Lancet Commissions are independent research teams convened by the Lancet to examine specific health topics and recommend policy actions. This report was compiled by 44 experts, including ten Youth Commissioners, who reviewed some 550 peer‑reviewed studies since starting their work in 2021. It follows the first report on adolescent health and wellbeing published in 2016.
“What life is like as an adolescent today is very different than ten years ago,” says Baird. “Given all these other competing demands for resources, attention, and focus, adolescents have once again fallen into the background. It’s time to really remind people of why they’re important, and that ignoring them in this time of rapid change is potentially disastrous.”
Though there is some good news in the report’s f indings – declining rates of cigarette smoking and alcohol use and better access to education, particularly for girls – the report warns that the health of young people is at “a tipping point” in an uncertain and rapidly changing world.

After an intense two-day manhunt, Minnesota police captured Vance Boelter, 57, the suspect
accused of shooting two state lawmakers and their spouses. The arrest took place on Sunday

into custody without the use of force, according to official reports.
The case began early Saturday morning when police responded to a shooting at the home of
State Senator John Hoffman. Concerned that the suspect might target other political figures,
officers quickly went to the residence of Representative Melissa Hortman. Upon their arrival, Mr.
Boelter opened fire on them before escaping on foot through a golf course located behind the
house. This incident marked the beginning of what authorities called the largest manhunt in
Minnesota's history.
Throughout the weekend, more than 100 officers and nearly 20 SWAT teams were deployed
across Sibley County, a largely rural area southwest of Minneapolis. Law enforcement agencies
worked together, setting up a temporary command center in a nearby parking lot to coordinate
search operations.
The breakthrough in the search came on Sunday afternoon when officers discovered Mr.
Boelter’s car and hat abandoned on a remote stretch of road. This discovery significantly narrowed
the search area. Later, an officer reported seeing someone, believed to be the suspect, running
into a wooded area nearby.
Further confirmation came when a local resident provided footage from a trail camera
installed on private property. The image captured on the camera showed a person matching Mr.
Boelter’s description. Acting on this evidence, police established a one-square-mile perimeter,
deploying drones and police dogs to assist in tracking the suspect’s movements.
Using aerial surveillance, officers spotted Mr. Boelter crawling through thick shrubs. Drones
tracked him from above, allowing SWAT teams to converge on his location without engaging in a
violent confrontation. Authorities emphasized that despite the suspect being armed, the arrest was
made peacefully and without incident.
Following the capture, a photo was released showing Mr. Boelter standing in the field where
he was apprehended. The image was edited to obscure the faces of the arresting officers for
privacy and security reasons. At the command center, law enforcement officials celebrated the
successful end to the operation.
Investigators later praised the rapid response and coordination among different police
departments. Officials noted that the quick decision by Brooklyn Park officers to check
Representative Hortman’s home shortly after the first shooting may have prevented further
violence and shortened the duration of the manhunt.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is
an approach which is neither language learning nor subject
learning, but an amalgam of both and is linked to the
processes of convergence – the fusion of elements which
may have been previously fragmented, such as subjects in
the curriculum. This is where CLIL is groundbreaking.
To give a parallel example common in recent times, we
can take studies on the environment. A seminal publication
on the subject in the 1960s later led to a need to educate
young people in schools so as to both inform and, perhaps
more crucially, influence behavior. Topics relating to the
environment could already be found in chemistry, economics,
geography, physics, and even psychology. Yet, as climate
change became increasingly worrying, education responded
with the introduction of a new subject: “Environmental studies”.
In order to structure this new subject, teachers of different
disciplines would have needed to climb out of their respective
mindsets grounded in physics, chemistry, geography,
psychology and so on, to explore ways of building an integrated
curriculum, and to develop alternative methodologies by
which to implement it. Climate change is a global and local
phenomenon, so the increasing availability in some countries
of information and communication technologies during
the 1990s provided tools by which to make some of these
methodologies operational.
If we return to languages and CLIL, we have a similar
situation. The late 1990s meant that educational insight was
firmly set on achieving a high degree of language awareness.
Appropriate methodologies were to be used to attain the
best possible results in a way which accommodated diverse
learning styles.

LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TODAY
Until a few years ago, learning a foreign language took
place largely in the classroom, within an education system.
It usually meant learning grammar rules and vocabulary,
doing written exercises, reading specially written texts and
answering comprehension questions and - possibly -
listening to recorded texts (and answering further
comprehension questions about these, too). A lot of people
learned the language this way; in fact, you may have done
so yourself.
However, some adults who first experienced a foreign
language at school in the past did not have much success
with it. This was often because they could only see the
difficulties, such as the differences between the L1 and the
target language (L2). They often became demotivated and
decided that English was too difficult, that it had no real
use for them, and many of them gave it up as soon as they
could. They joined the large worldwide community of
unsuccessful foreign language learners.
Today, however, because English is so widely available on
the web, and in social media, as well as in many
workplaces, it has become a reality - and even a
requirement - for a great many people. As a result, it is
much easier to see the connection between what is done in
the classroom and the use of the language in the outside
world, and to ensure that the first can be seen to be a
practical preparation for the second.

The Missing Ingredient in Education? Curiosity.
It’s easy to forget how important individual passion is in
education; too often it can feel like it’s a game of just painting
by the numbers. But if we all think about it for a moment,
isn’t learning actually meant to be a joyous experience? If
you think about your own life, haven’t you had an afternoon
fly past because you’ve been gripped by a certain task, a
particular lesson, a specific train of thought? School education
is no different. If we make room for young people’s individual
curiosities, notice and nurture them, we can make learning a
natural experience.
Once we find that individual spark in a child, in many
ways, the hard part is over. They can lead the way with their
learning and they don’t have to be coaxed into it. Curiosity can
be utilized through inquiry-based learning and schools all over
the world are already making the most of this type of learning.
For instance, children are driven to the museums where
they are engaged in stories, games and activities. To develop
curiosity, children identify an exhibit on a particular topic and
are encouraged to ask questions about the exhibits to fill in
the gaps in their own knowledge. Along with utilizing manmade resources such as museums, nature itself has an
important part to play in inquiry-based learning. The world is
full of natural wonders which can spark curiosity in children.
Not only is identifying and encouraging curiosity pivotal
in a child’s educational career, but it will be useful for them in
the working world too. By instilling these behaviours early on
we can help kids to become lifelong learners, which they will
need to be, as single-track careers become an antiquated idea
and we’ll potentially find ourselves working several different
careers within our lifetime. Curiosity may have killed the cat in
decades past, but it could be the key to a more stable future
for the next generation.

Hypatia (born c. 355 CE—died March 415,
Alexandria) was a mathematician, astronomer, and
philosopher who lived in a very turbulent era in Alexandria’s
history. She is the earliest female mathematician of whose

was the daughter of Theon of Alexandria, himself a

preserve the Greek mathematical and astronomical heritage
