Minha mãe tem 74 anos e, como milhões de
pessoas no mundo, faz uso frequente do celular. É com
ele que. conversando por voz ou por vídeo. diariamente. vence a distância e a saudade dos netos e netas.
Mas, para ela, assim como para milhares e
milhares de pessoas, o celular pode ser também uma
fonte de engano. De vez em quando, por acreditar no que
chega por meio de amigos no seu WhatsApp, me envia
uma ou outra mensagem contendo uma fake news. A
última foi sobre um suposto problema com a vacina da
gripe que, por um momento, diferente de anos anteriores, a fez desistir de se vacinar.
Eu e minha mãe, como boa parte dos
brasileiros, não nascemos na era digital. Nesta sociedade
somos os chamados migrantes e, como tais, a tecnologia
nos gera um certo estranhamento (e até constrangimento),
embora nos fascine e facilite a vida.
Sejamos sinceros. Nada nem ninguém nos
preparou para essas mudanças que revolucionaram a
comunicação. Pior: é difícil destrinchar o que é verdade
em tempo de fake news.
Um dos maiores estudos sobre a disseminação
de notícias falsas na internet, publicado ano passado na
revista "Science", foi realizado pelo Instituto de Tecnologia
de Massachusetts (MIT, na sigla em inglês), dos Estados
Unidos, e concluiu que as notícias falsas se espalham
70% mais rápido que as verdadeiras e alcançam muito
mais gente.
Isso porque as fake news se valem de textos
alarmistas, polêmicos, sensacionalistas, com destaque
para notícias atreladas a temas de saúde, seguidas de
informações mentirosas sobre tudo. Até pouco tempo
atrás, a imprensa era a detentora do que chamamos de
produção de notícias. E os fatos obedeciam a critérios de
apuração e checagem.
O problema é que hoje mantemos essa mesma
crença, quase que religiosa, junto a mensagens das quais
não identificamos sequer a origem, boa parte delas
disseminada em redes sociais. Confia-se a ponto de
compartilhar, sem questionar. O impacto disso é preocupante. Partindo de
pesquisas que mostram que notícias e seus
enquadramentos influenciam opiniões e constroem leituras
da realidade. a disseminação das notícias falsas tem
criado versões alternativas do mundo, da História, das
Ciências "ao gosto do cliente", como dizem por ar.
Os problemas gerados estão em todos os
campos. No âmbito familiar, por exemplo, vai de pais que
deixam de vacinar seus filhos a ponto de criar um grave
problema de saúde pública de impacto mundial. E passa
por jovens vítimas de violência virtual e física.
No mundo corporativo, estabelecimentos
comerciais fecham portas, profissionais perdem suas
reputações e produtos são desacreditados como resultado
de uma foto descontextualizada, uma imagem alterada ou
uma legenda falsa.
A democracia também se fragiliza. O processo
democrático corre o risco de ter sua força e credibilidade afetadas por boatos. Não há um estudo capaz de
mensurar os danos causados, mas iniciativas
fragmentadas já sinalizam que ela está em risco.
Estamos em um novo momento cultural e
social, que deve ser entendido para encontrarmos um
caminho seguro de convivência com as novas formas e
ferramentas de comunicação.
No Congresso Nacional, tramitam várias
iniciativas nesse sentido, que precisam ser amplamente
debatidas, com a participação de especialistas e
representantes da sociedade civil.
O problema das fake news certamente passa
pelo domínio das novas tecnologias, com instrumentos de
combate ao crime, mas, também, pela pedagogia do
esclarecimento.
O que posso afirmar, é que, embora não
saibamos ainda o antídoto que usaremos contra a
disseminação de notícias falsas em escala industrial, não
passa pela cabeça de ninguém aceitar a utilização de
qualquer tipo de controle que não seja democrático.

try to control what is now the worst outbreak of the
coronavirus in Europe.
Authorities in the Veneto region said the event
would end later on Sunday, two days earlier than
scheduled. Italy has by far the highest number of
coronavirus cases in Europe, with 152. Three people have
died.Italy has imposed strict quarantine restrictions in two
northern "hotspot" regions close to Milan and Venice.
About 50,000 people cannot enter or leave several
towns in Veneto and Lombardy for the next two weeks
without special permission. Even outside the zone, many
businesses and schools have suspended activities. and
sporting events have been cancelled. The BBC's Mark
Lowen described the situation just outside the zone. ln
neighbouring Austria, a train from Venice was stopped at
the Austrian border after it emerged that two passengers
had fever symptoms. Austria's Interior Minister Karl
Nehammer later confirmed to the BBC that the pair tested
negative for coronavirus.
ºAll authorities have acted quickly and with great
caution in this case," said Mr Nehammer in a statement.
"The reporting chain worked without delay." Elsewhere, authorities in South Korea and Iran are battling
to control rising numbers of infections. South Korea has
raised its coronavirus alert to the "highest level".
The new strain of coronavirus, which originated
last year in Hubei province in China, causes a respiratory
disease called Covid-19. China has seen more than
76,000 infections and 2,442 deaths.
What is happening in Italy?
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on
Saturday that "extraordinary measures" would come into
force to try to stem the rising number of coronavirus cases.
He said the quarantine restrictions could last for
weeks. Police, and if necessary the armed forces, will have
the authority to ensure the regulations are enforced.
Angelo Borrelli, the head of Italy's Civil Protection
Department, told reporters that 11 O of the confirmed cases
were in Lombardy, with 21 in Veneto with others in EmiliaRomagna and Lazio. Officials reported a third death on
Sunday, an elderly woman from the town of Crema
suffering from cancer. Italian officials say they are still
trying to trace the source of the outbreak.
Universities in Milan have been closed and the
city's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, said schools would also close
their doors while the outbreak continued. "As a precaution I
think that the schools have to be closed in Milan. I will
propose to the president of the region to enlarge the
precaution to the entire metropolitan city area. lt is just a
precautton, we don't want to create parue," he said.
Meanwhile Giorgio Armanì's fashion show, scheduled

ahead but without any media or buyers present. The show
