Generative grammar assumes that speakers consciously apply explicit rules to produce sentences, in a way comparable to following written instructions step by step. 

Generative grammar is defined as a probabilistic system that generates sentences primarily through the repetition of memorized linguistic fragments. 

Generative grammar consists of an explicit, finite system of rules—comparable to an algorithm—that specifies how to generate all and only the grammatical sentences of a language, independently of a speaker’s unconscious linguistic competence. 

Generative grammar and other grammatical models share the same underlying assumptions, differing only in the technical terminology used to describe sentence structure.
