Reading as an Active Process
Many people assume that reading is simply the ability to recognize words and understand their literal
meanings. However, proficient readers know that comprehension is a far more sophisticated process. Rather
than passively absorbing information, skilled readers
actively construct meaning by interacting with the
text, questioning the author’s ideas, and integrating
new information with their existing knowledge.
One of the most effective reading strategies is prediction. Before beginning a text, readers examine titles,
headings, visuals, and introductory paragraphs to
anticipate its content and purpose. These predictions
are continuously revised as new information emerges,
demonstrating that reading is a dynamic rather than
linear process.
Another essential strategy is monitoring comprehension. Expert readers constantly evaluate whether they
understand what they are reading. When comprehension breaks down, they employ repair strategies such
as rereading, slowing their reading pace, consulting
context clues, or summarizing key ideas before moving forward. Less experienced readers, by contrast,
often continue reading despite confusion, which limits
their overall understanding.
Critical reading extends beyond comprehension
encouraging readers evaluate the credibility,
assumptions, and intentions a text. Instead of
accepting every statement as factual, critical readers
consider the author’s perspective, identify possible
bias, and compare the information with other reliable
sources. In today’s digital environment, where misinformation can spread rapidly, these analytical skills
have become increasingly important.
Furthermore, effective readers recognize that every
text is written for a particular audience and purpose.
A scientific article, a newspaper editorial, and a social
media post all require different reading approaches.
Adjusting one’s strategy according to genre, purpose,
and context enables readers to extract relevant information more efficiently.
Finally, reading should be viewed as an ongoing
dialogue between the reader and the author. Meaning does not reside solely in the words printed on the
page; instead, it is constructed through the interaction between textual evidence, the reader’s prior
knowledge, cultural background, and personal experiences. Consequently, two readers may develop different—but equally valid—interpretations of the same text, provided that their conclusions are supported by
evidence.
Ultimately, becoming a proficient reader involves
much more than increasing reading speed. It requires
conscious strategy use, critical thinking, and a willingness to question, reflect, and make meaningful connections throughout the reading process.

A leader in the study of longevity is returning to
UCLA Health
Renowned geroscientist and computational biologist
Steve Horvath, PhD, is returning as a professor in the
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA on July 1, after
4 1/2 years in the biotech industry. Previously, he was a
full-time professor of Human Genetics and Biostatistics at
UCLA for 22 years.
Geroscience is the modern term for the biology of aging.
Dr. Horvath, who was born in Germany, is internationally
known for his research into the aging process and, in
particular, epigenetics, how the environment influences
our genes, affecting a person's longevity.
His groundbreaking research, which he began at UCLA in
2011, looked at the "epigenetic age" of more than 13,000
DNA samples of people from the U.S. and Europe,
determined from the chemical modifications of their DNA
(also called DNA methylation).
People whose epigenetic age was higher than their
chronological age were shown to be at an increased risk
of death from all causes. From this, Dr. Horvath
developed the "epigenetic clock," a way of measuring
biological aging and mortality risk.
"The universal mammalian methylation clock was really a
UCLA triumph — a true team effort," said Dr. Horvath,
who received the 2026 Luminary Award at the Precision
Medicine World Conference. That project, part of the
international Mammalian Methylation Consortium that Dr.
Horvath led, drew on collaborators across UCLA,
including Jason Ernst, PhD; William Yang, MD, PhD;
Ebru Erbay, MD, PhD; Karen Sears, PhD; and Ren
Larison, PhD.
Aging is a growing field of study and the Division of
Geriatrics is a research leader.
"Aging happens at the cellular level — every tissue in the
human body shows signs of aging," explained Arun S.
Karlamangla, MD, PhD, chief of the UCLA Division of
Geriatrics. "The epigenetic profile is affected by stresses
in life. As we age, these stresses change DNA
functionality. Dr. Horvath's research showed that these
changes can be quantified and used to predict a person's
lifespan."
None of us has control over the DNA we're born with, but
we do have some control over how long we live.
"The epigenetic clock is one window into biological aging,
but it doesn't capture everything, and plenty of
well-established factors influence how long and how well
a person lives," said Dr. Horvath. "The strongest
evidence is for the basics: not smoking, maintaining a
healthy weight, a sensible diet, regular physical activity
and good sleep."
Dr. Horvath has run the test on himself and by the
epigenetic clock, he is about three years younger than
his chronological age of 58.
New medications also show promise for improving
longevity, he said. "There's active research interest in
newer GLP-1 receptor agonists — e.g., the
Ozempic/Wegovy class — which are reshaping how we
think about metabolic health," said Dr. Horvath, adding
that the same is true for anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic
drugs.
Dr. Horvath's epigenetic clocks have become standard
tools across aging research, used by teams worldwide to
test what actually changes biological aging.
They have been applied in the randomized DO-HEALTH
trial, where omega-3, vitamin D and exercise modestly
slowed epigenetic aging in adults older than 70; in the
Women's Health Initiative, where faster epigenetic aging
tracked with later cognitive impairment and dementia;
and in studies of cardiovascular disease and mortality.
This kind of population-level application aligns closely
with the Division of Geriatrics' emphasis on healthy,
independent life expectancy.
Dr. Horvath's research has also shown that the cells of
different organs age at different rates. For instance, the
liver ages faster than other organs, he said, particularly in
the case of people with obesity.
Another discovery was that the blood and brain tissues of
human males age faster than those of females, which
might be the reason women live longer on average than
men across all cultures and countries.
Leading in aging research
The study of aging at the UCLA Division of Geriatrics
focuses on understanding the epidemiology of
age-related conditions such as frailty, cognitive
impairment and dementia, and improving the delivery of
compassionate, comprehensive care to older adults.
Dr. Horvath's return to UCLA will bolster the department's
role in aging research by translating his cellular research
to clinical trials, said Dr. Karlamangla.
"We want to be pioneers in all three aspects: cellular
research, clinical and population-level research, and
health services and implementation research," Dr.
Karlamangla said. "We are one of the pioneers in clinical
innovation for the delivery of healthcare to older adults,"
he said, an approach that is called bench to bedside.
Life expectancy is important, but even more important is
good health, which is necessary for independence, Dr.
Karlamangla emphasized. This is referred to as healthy
life expectancy, or independent life expectancy.
New work at UCLA
Along with serving as a professor, Dr. Horvath will return
to UCLA Health as director of aging biology research in
the Department of Medicine, working across 11 divisions.

"What I'm most looking forward to in returning to UCLA is

that setting with former colleagues and future students is
what excites me most.

More than 20 children killed in DR Congo school fire
At least 24 schoolchildren have died in a stampede as
they tried to flee a fire that engulfed two schools in
rebel-held Bukavu in the eastern Democratic Republic of
Congo, officials there have said.
Adults are also reported to have died in the fire and there
are fears that the death toll could rise further in the
densely populated Kadutu commune.

World's largest intelligent container ship sets sail
The delivery of the nation's first and the world's largest intelligent container ship powered entirely by electricity marks the transition toward a greener and more intelligent future by China's shipping industry, experts said.
Following the successful completion of various tests, the vessel, named Ning Yuan Dian Kun, was delivered in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, on Wednesday.
"From the initial project approval to the final delivery, the vessel showcased the full life-cycle development of zero carbon ships, characterized by pure electric propulsion, autonomous navigation and high operational efficiency, achieved by China's shipping industry," said Ma Hongmeng, a senior engineer at Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and the person in charge of the intelligent container ship.
According to Ma, the ship is proof that China's coastal container transportation segment is entering a new era marked by zero-emissions, intelligent operations and high efficiency, a prerequisite for achieving carbon neutrality and shipping energy transformation.
With a capacity of over 740 twenty-foot equivalent units, the vessel was independently developed and designed by SDARI. Its electric propulsion system was provided by Shanghai Marine Equipment Research Institute. Both companies are subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corp.
"Independently developed by SMERI, the innovative electric propulsion system has undergone maritime navigation tests, which fully proved its reliability, superiority and adaptability," said Wu Guodong, a senior engineer at the institute.
He added that with all performance indicators meeting expectations, the technological breakthrough from design to application highlighted China's leading position in pure electric ship power system integration worldwide, and laid a solid foundation for the transformation of China's shipping industry to a greener and carbon neutral one.
With a length of 127.8 meters and a width of 21.6 meters, the ship has been tailor-made for Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co and will run on the coastal shipping route between Ningbo and Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.
A senior official from the Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration said that due to the distinctive features of new-generation intelligent vessels, a dedicated service team has been established to provide comprehensive support. The team will conduct continuous tracking and precise assessments throughout the entire process — from design and construction to navigation — ensuring a thorough grasp of the vessels' technical characteristics and effective control of operational risks.
The vessel is equipped with 10 container-shaped power units with a total power supply capacity of about 19,600 kilowatt-hours.
"This allows the ship to achieve zero-emission and zero-noise green operation throughout the entire voyage, while perfectly adapting to the practical operational needs of coastal container transportation," Ma said.
Wang Ting, captain of Ning Yuan Dian Kun, also confirmed this view. "Compared with traditional fuel-powered vessels, the most noticeable change in a fully electric seagoing ship is the lack of noise. In the past, the engine room would be filled by the roar of the main engine, whereas voyages nowadays are almost silent. This creates a more relaxed working environment and allows crew members to concentrate better on operations — a significant improvement brought about by green energy," he said.
He added that in terms of power response, the torque output of electric propulsion motors is linear and instantaneous. Acceleration and deceleration are smooth and highly responsive, with virtually no delay, making operations more straightforward. However, this also places new demands on operators — they must learn to manage energy efficiently, closely monitor power consumption, and plan vessel speed in a more rational manner.
The ship has also adopted two permanent magnet synchronous propulsion motors, capable of cutting carbon emissions by 1,462 tons per year, and completely eliminating emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and fine particles.
"In this way, we manage to achieve zero pollution throughout the entire process of transportation, ranging from navigation and berthing to loading and unloading," Ma from SDARI said.
Currently, Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co operates 32 green and energy-efficient vessels, accounting for 57 percent of its self-owned fleet, marking the initial formation of a sizable green fleet.
Chen Xiaofeng, chairman of the company, said: "We hope to achieve breakthroughs in key areas through Ning Yuan Dian Kun. We aim to build the country's first demonstration model of a fully electric seagoing vessel, promoting the expansion of pure electric technology from inland waterways to maritime transport. We seek to establish a complete, replicable technical and operational system for 'zero-carbon transportation'."

Xbox caps cloud gaming at 15 hours a month for
Game Pass subscribers
Xbox is introducing strict monthly time limits for Game
Pass subscribers who stream games online through its
cloud gaming service.
The changes, which come into effect in November, will
see a subscriber to the £16.99 Ultimate monthly plan
able to stream games for up to 15 hours a month - before
having to purchase additional cloud play time.
Xbox said the limits were due to the rising cost of cloud
gaming, and they would allow the firm to "continue to
invest" in the service's "reliability and performance".
While some questioned whether the service was used by
many to begin with, others called out the additional limits
for subscribers.
Cloud gaming allows players to stream and play games
online from a remote server using a phone, tablet or
controller, rather than downloading and running it on a
PC or console at home.
Different tiers of subscription to Game Pass will have
different limits.
Premium users will get 10 hours, while those on the basic
Essential tier will get five hours a month before they have
to pay for extra time.
Xbox claimed just 4% of the people who use Games
Pass - its Netflix-style subscription plan for games - use
its cloud gaming service.
A recent Wall Street Journal article reported Game Pass
has 30 million subscribers, which would leave the number
of people affected by the cloud gaming changes at
roughly 1.2 million.
"This is a pretty awful change, hopefully Xbox adds an
extra zero on the end cause 15hrs is abysmal. 30
minutes a day, really?" posted one commenter on X.
Jez Corden of Windows Central told the BBC the
announcement showed that "absolutely nothing is safe
from the AI-driven component crisis," but he added it also
highlighted "where Microsoft's priorities are".
Both cloud gaming and AI use the same infrastructure -
data centres - to process information.
"For them to continue to offer unlimited access to
Microsoft Copilot [AI] for free but restrict paid cloud
gaming in this way shows some contradiction," he added.
Xbox said in a blog post that from November, users
would also be able to use the company's cloud gaming
feature without subscribing to Game Pass, but by buying
"cloud playtime hours" through the Xbox store.
It has not revealed how much extra hours of cloud
gaming would cost.
Xbox's 'reset'
The news comes as Asha Sharma, Xbox's chief
executive, told the BBC in an exclusive recent interview
that the company and the industry as a whole needed to
"start to innovate on affordability and efficiency," amid a
"crisis" in computing prices.
"As an industry, we're in the middle of 'Rampocalypse'.
We're in the middle of people coming back from Covid
and the patterns changing," she said.
"Rampocalypse" refers to the fact that the cost of a
previously cheap hardware component, random access
memory (Ram), has shot up in price with the expansion
of compute-hungry data centres. Some people also call it
"Ramageddon".
Sharma added: "Within Xbox, we haven't been healthy.
And so a lot of the reset that will take us throughout the
year is really meant to help ensure that we are here for
the next 25 years and we're continuing to serve our
purpose and our mission."
According to Xbox owner Microsoft's July financial filings,
annual Xbox revenue dropped by $1.7bn to roughly
$21.8bn (£16.1bn) - a 7% decline from 2025.
Part of Sharma's reset has seen 3,200 people let go at
the company - with 1,600 job losses announced in July,
and the remaining posts to go gradually over the course
of Microsoft's 2027 financial year.
Studios which had been acquired by Xbox - including
Compulsion Games, which made the Bafta-winning
South of Midnight and Double Fine Productions, makers
of Psychonauts - were also made independent again.
Sharma is betting these changes can reverse its fortunes
despite concerns over its subscription strategy and rising
AI-related costs.
"Sometimes you have to restructure a business when it's
not doing well, and that was true with our Xbox
business," Microsoft's president Brad Smith recently told
the BBC.
Cloud gaming
In an interview in July, Jeff Gattiss, Amazon's head of gaming, told the BBC he believed the rising cost of tech
would mean people will turn to streaming games online
rather than buying new consoles.
However, despite some big names investing in the
technology, it has never fully reached the mainstream.
Google launched its own cloud gaming service Stadia in
November 2019, positioning it as a "Netflix for games".
The service was discontinued in January 2023 after the
company said it had not attracted as many users as
hoped.
For many gamers, cloud gaming remains too unreliable
for regular use due to its reliance on high-speed internet -

For Melanie Herbert, years of hospital treatments for a
serious medical condition fueled an early interest in how
healthcare providers communicate and address their
patients' needs.
The experience informed her decision years later to
launch Sync Labs, a health technology startup that aims
to improve care for older Americans, while she was still a
student at the University of Pennsylvania.
"I feel like it's unfortunately a very neglected space where
a lot of the technology and tools are really behind,"
Herbert, 23, told CBS News.
Although such entrepreneurship is clearly unusual for
young people, it is by no means unheard of these days.
Research from the Bank of America Institute shows that
Generation Z members are contributing
"disproportionately" to a recent surge in business
formation.
In a trend that highlights how younger Americans are helping catalyze economic growth, the number of new
business applications filed by Gen Zers jumped 66% in
June compared with a year ago. That far outpaced
applications filed by other generations, the Bank of
America Institute found.
Young Americans are helping fuel a broader jump in
applications to form businesses. According to the Federal
Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Americans filed more than
531,000 business applications in June, more than double
the 2020 figure.
Scott Issen, CEO of Future Founders, a nonprofit group
that helps nurture entrepreneurial skills, said demand for
the organization's services is surging — a shift he
attributes to a change in many young people's attitude
toward employment.
"Macroeconomically, I think there's less interest year over
year for young people to work for others," he told CBS
News. "They would prefer to be their own bosses and
create their own opportunity."
The burst in entrepreneurship among younger Americans
isn't limited to graduates of prestigious universities.
Lower-income households now account for 25% of all
new businesses getting off the ground, up from 20% in
2020, the Bank of America Institute found.
"In a lot of ways, I think entrepreneurship is
democratizing right now," said Angela Lee, co-director of
the Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship Center at Columbia
Business School. "So I'm not at all surprised to see
younger, lower-income founders start companies."
AI lowers barriers to entry
Experts attribute part of the surge in Gen Z founders to
the advent of artificial intelligence, which is helping young
people get their businesses off the ground by automating
basic tasks and reducing startup costs.
"The barriers to entry are getting much lower," Lori
Rosenkopf, a professor at the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania, told CBS News. "It's pretty
easy for anyone to start building some content, making
themselves a content creator or doing a little bit of vibe
coding."
AI can also help young business founders save money.
Lee, a serial entrepreneur, said she paid roughly $15,000
for a single web developer when she started her first
company.
"Now with AI, something that would have taken an app
developer three months and $15,000, you can vibe code
over the weekend," she said.
AI is integral to Herbert's company, which uses the
technology to streamline information from health
providers' notes, staff observations, lab results and other
data. For example, Sync Labs' tech can "ambiently listen"
to staff meetings when activated, creating a fuller picture
of patient needs and offering clinically backed
recommendations from the company's generative AI
models, she said.
Herbert also said AI has been a "game changer" for daily operations at the San Francisco-based company, noting
that it helps speed up tasks and reduce expenses. "As a
startup, time is everything," she said. "We're trying to get
our product out to as many people as possible as quickly
as possible."
"There is a lot of job dislocation right now"
Today's challenging economic backdrop — and the rise
of AI — also helps explain why more young Americans
are choosing to launch their own businesses, experts
said.
"There is a lot of job dislocation right now, and younger
people are finding it hard to secure traditional
employment given our current economic conditions,"
Wharton's Rosenkopf said.
Although U.S. unemployment remains low and job growth
has been solid, research shows that recent college
graduates are struggling to find work, especially as AI
starts to automate certain functions normally reserved for
entry-level workers. A recent ZipRecruiter survey of 1,000
recruiters found that 38% of employers have shifted basic
data-processing tasks away from entry-level workers and
onto AI.
Herbert said she didn't start Sync Labs due to concerns
about the labor market, but noted that the stress of
finding a job has weighed heavily on her friends.
"Being in this generation, it's probably one of the most
talked about things," she said.
